𝑮𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝑻𝒐 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝑻𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒔 ! Approximately 90% of the world’s goods are transported via container ships, making shipping containers an integral part of global trade and transport. Let’s dive into the various types of containers used for sea shipments: 1. 𝑫𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 This is the most common type of container. It is used to transport cargo contained within pallets, boxes, flexitanks, barrels and suchlike, when a controlled temperature isn’t needed. Dry containers come in 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, and 40ft , 45ft high cube (HC). A HC container is 1ft taller than a standard container. 2. 𝑹𝒆𝒆𝒇𝒆𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Reefer containers are refrigerated. They transport goods that must be stored at a particular temperature, such as foodstuffs and medicines. They have a temperature range of -65°C to +40°C and come in 20ft, 40ft, 40ft HC and 45ft HC. Reefer containers can be expensive because of the cost of energy to maintain temperature. 3. 𝑻𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Tank containers are cylindrical and made of anti-corrosive material to transport gasses, and liquids, including dangerous cargo. They are 20ft and 40ft in size 4. 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒕 𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Flat rack containers typically come in 20ft and 40ft and are open on their long sides to take large cargo such as machinery, vehicles and pipes. 5. 𝑶𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Open top containers have a tarpaulin instead of a solid roof. They are ideal for cargo that can’t be loaded through the door, such as machinery, as they can be loaded from above. They have a larger capacity than standard containers, come in 20ft, 40ft and 40ft HC . 6. 𝑶𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 An open side container is also known as a side door container, so it is not surprising to learn it has doors that open on the long side to load cargo that can’t fit through the narrower end doors. These containers come in 20ft, 40ft and 40ft HC. 7. 𝑯𝒂𝒍𝒇 𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Half height containers transport heavy goods that don’t require the height of a standard container. They tend to be used for bulk goods and are 20ft in size. 8. 𝑫𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Double door containers have doors at both ends to load and unload from either. This can be convenient for transporting cargo such as cars. Double door containers come in the same dimensions as the dry containers 9. 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓 Hard top containers, in 20ft, 40ft or 40ft HC, have a detachable steel roof. They transport heavy goods, such as raw materials, and tall cargo, such as large machinery, which is loaded from above. They are a variant of the open top container. Remember, choosing the right container depends on the type and size of your cargo. Whether you’re shipping electronics, machinery, or perishables, understanding container options ensures a smooth voyage across the high seas! #Logistics #SupplyChain

#Intermodal total service logistic facilities are essential for making #rail viable for many #freight customers. Many companies are too small to own/operate freight trucks and warehousing/distribution facilities. Even those that do may not move enough goods between nodes to justify a private rail siding. Total service logistic facilities can offer warehousing and distribution services. By pooling customers together, it creates the scale needed to make rail the best option for freight between nodes, facilities, and freight hubs. In #NewZealand, companies such as Mainfreight and Toll Group are basically offering these services, with KiwiRail operating the freight trains. However, the current situation is still not attractive or viable for many potential customers. Issues such as not meeting higher demands/volumes for larger customers, not offering enough services, customers not having the ability to control/conduct their own handling/operations in facilities, etc. lead customers to choose typically trucking based transportation #logistics. In an era when increased modal shift to rail is necessary (especially for longer distances), because things such of road safety, road degradation, truck driver shortages, and most importantly climate change, making rail more attractive and competitive for a wider range of customers is vital. JR Freight is Japan’s main freight rail operator, and they have begun offering total service logistics and distributions to customers. JR Freight Tokyo Rail Gate (JR貨物東京レールゲート) is a multi-tenant logistics/intermodal facility located at the Tokyo Freight Terminal Station. They optionally provide tenets with freight handling and storage services, and/or lease space for tenets to conduct their own operations. The Rail Gate WEST and Rail Gate EAST buildings at the Tokyo Freight Terminal Station offer incentives like rent discounts for warehouse space based on railroad usage, encouraging companies to integrate rail transport into their logistics operations. Customers benefit from cost savings, enhanced logistics efficiency, reduced transportation costs, lower carbon emissions, and improved supply chain efficiency. Accommodating multiple tenant companies allows them to share resources and benefit from railway transport synergies. This multi-tenant approach helps companies optimize logistics operations and achieve greater efficiency. While massive the scale of the Rail Gate facilities is likely unnecessary for NZ and there are things which could be improved with the facilities (even some stuff NZ is doing better), relevant parts of the operating model and business structure could be used to incentivize more companies to choose rail freight. While Mainfreight and Toll could expand their offerings, KiwiRail could even become more of a total service provider for suitable customers, as a way to increase revenue and it’s somewhat like the freight version of transit-oriented development being owned by the passenger rail provider.
