ERG Environmental: Report Highlights Chemical Recycling's Limitations on Plastic Waste Entering the dialogue surrounding chemical recycling, in response to recent concerns raised by advocacy groups Beyond Plastics and the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN), offers a nuanced perspective on the efficacy and sustainability of chemical recycling as a solution to the plastic waste crisis. The report from these groups highlights several criticisms of chemical recycling, suggesting that it generates significant amounts of toxic waste, contributes to climate change, and falls short of providing a viable solution to the plastic waste problem. However, acknowledges these challenges while emphasizing the importance of considering the full spectrum of data and perspectives. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebVZGHn5

#PPWR also looking for a bit of clarity? Maybe this article can help. #EU #plastic #regulations #plasticrecycling
The proposal for a PPWR regulation (EU packaging regulation) adopted by the European Union replaces the currently valid 1994 packaging directive. The new regulations are intended to stop the predicted rising trend in packaging waste by 2030. What does all this mean for the recycling industry? In the effort to do better when it comes to the environment, there has sometimes been a knock-on negative impact created elsewhere. The recycling of plastics is very often noted as one of them, from the recycling process creating microplastics to our waste just being shifted and not recycled as well as human rights concerns within the waste recycling supply chain. In responding to the latter issue, The Circulate Initiative have created The Harmonized Responsible Sourcing Framework for Recycled Plastics, branded as the first global effort to establish a harmonized and actionable framework to implement responsible sourcing practices for all actors in the recycled plastics value chain. The Harmonized Framework is designed to create a practical approach to responsible sourcing practices that can be adopted by all stakeholders. It is informed by the perspectives of informal waste sector workers and waste pickers and designed to focus on their needs. A copy of part 1 of the framework, covering themes, definitions and indicators can be downloaded from the webpage, below. https://lnkd.in/eU3DD-Z4

The scope of the plastics treaty should include alternatives and substitutes. However, there are no internationally agreed definitions of plastic alternatives nor plastic substitutes. We talk to Dr Amardeep Wander from Waste Recycling Environment Network (W.R.E.N.) to understand why sound definitions will support informed treaty negotiations #INC4 #PlasticsTreaty #CleanPacific #OnePacificVoice

NEW ON THE BLOG🚨 This February, The Center for Climate Integrity released a report on plastic recycling. Evidence shows that for decades, the plastics industry knew plastic recycling was ‘virtually hopeless’ yet continued to promote it. E-waste is the fastest-growing waste category in the EU. It often contains hazardous materials that harm the environment and human health. The WEEE Directive was introduced to prevent waste, promote recycling, and reduce illegal exports. Despite updates, challenges remain in meeting recycling targets and addressing changes in electronic equipment production. Follow the link bellow to read our submission to the European Commission where we emphasise the urgency of revising this directive to align with modern circular economy principles. https://lnkd.in/eMVCXK4e

In case anyone missed it – Defra got it over the line !!! The regulations are being laid. Absolute slog to get here since the initial release of the Resources & Waste Strategy back in December 2018 and still lots of really important work to do – anyone want to talk about emissions trading 😊. Many in this space including local authorities and the professional bodies have played an important part in helping to shape the new regulations. You have all had a finger on the tilla of public policy, pushing it in the direction it needs to go for a better resource future – never underestimate the importance of that and never let anyone tell you different. Are the regulations perfect – clearly not – but as Voltaire said “…perfect is the enemy of good…”. What is vitally important now is that we remain focused on rising to the challenge the new regulations present and we continue to work with Defra and other stakeholders on identifying and supporting the inevitable tweaks that will become necessary once the behemoth that is the collection and packaging reforms as well as other forth coming changes (WEEE, Digital Waste Tracking, Controllers & Transport, Textiles regulations, ban on disposable vapes, etc etc) gather pace. Personally, it’s been a privilege working with you on this. I look forward to continuing to champion the issues under the context of the new and exciting ‘resource management reality’ now racing towards us. Very well done everybody !!! https://lnkd.in/eaJ_86aD
