🤖 Automated Vehicles Act 2024 - Some important terms/points to become familiar with: 🚕 The distinction between 'User-in-charge' vehicles and others will be those where the the 'driver' retains some ability to exercise control of the car. A non-UIC journey is more Tom Cruise in Minority Report and less Will Smith in I Robot, and likely absolves people within the vehicle of any liability. 🚚 Marketing departments (especially managers) need to be very careful with how they describe their vehicles. Unless a criminal record is desired, don't make it seem more autonomous, futuristic or conscious than it really is. 🚙 Responsibility for compliance is largely imposed on 'Authorised Self-Driving Entities'. Undecided as yet who this will be, but probably the OEMs or software developers. 🚓 The National Infrastructure Commission has been tasked with reporting (by Feb 2025) on what to do to design, implement and utilise the necessary infrastructure to get people going fully automated. Dedicated lanes? 5G for everyone? 🚗 'Statements of Safety Principles' will be integral in deciding which vehicles are safe and authorised. Ideally, we'd have some indication of what this will include, but for now will have to make do with knowing that its a standard roughly equivalent to a 'careful and competent human driver'. Apparently, they based this standard on having carried out careful data analysis on drivers of convertible matt black wrapped BMW 420ds with private licence plates and red-leather interior 😉. #automotive #automated #AI

In 1959, engineer Nils Bohlin created the 3-point seatbelt. It has been celebrated world-wide as one of the greatest inventions of the last century and has been credited with saving over a million lives in the last 65 years. However, in hindsight this innovation might seem quite obvious. It seems natural that if people are folding in their seat, injuring their heads on the wheel or dash, you should put an extra harness over the shoulder. The problem was that, within the automotive industry in the 1950’s, there was no precedent for this technology. They didn’t know what they needed because they didn’t know what they were looking for. The ability to visualize something that does not exist is incredibly difficult. People are not good at wrapping their heads around problems they don’t realize they have. So the real genius of Bohlin was not in the creation of the solution, but in recognizing the problem. It is being able to finish the sentence, “I wish I had…” The nature of those three dots is incredibly important. ADAS, specifically in its primordial form of the Anti-lock Breaking System has arguably saved more lives than the 3-point seatbelt. This technology continues to be improved and increased with AI software. So as AI integration within vehicles continues to grow, and new technologies are developed to improve driver safety, this question always needs to stay front and center of our thoughts. It is not, ‘What is the solution?’ but more importantly, ‘What is the problem?’ Often the problems we don’t know we have are much bigger than the ones we see. Often the problems are not in the context, but with the context.
