For this joint capstone project, Maggie Zheng and Elva C. (IxD) improved the University of Washington’s augmented reality app: NOMR, or Novel Observation in Mixed Reality. Over 1,800 students use NOMR each year in UW’s 100-200 level physics labs to learn about particle physics. Maggie and Elva streamlined NOMR’s onboarding process for first-time VR users. They designed a quicker and smoother introduction, and also developed a better space design. These improvements enhanced overall communication through clearer instructions, more compelling animations, increased aural feedback, and more interactive activities. School is always exciting when unexpected connections between projects elevate learning! This week, our MYP Grade 7 students worked on an interdisciplinary unit between Individuals & Societies and Visual Art, building sculptures inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Their work caught the attention of our Grade 10 Immersive Story Design team. We saw the perfect opportunity to integrate 3D scanning technology and bring these sculptures to life in our VR world. To facilitate this, I curated resources that explored the impact of 3D scanning across various industries, such as engineering, manufacturing, medicine, and entertainment. Students chose their 3D scanning apps, experimented with settings, and had a blast digitizing the Grade 7 sculptures. These digital scans will soon become part of their immersive VR story, blending art, technology, and storytelling in a powerful transdisciplinary inquiry! Educational App Shoutout: Newton's Room This passthrough VR application teaches the concepts of mass, reflection, and drag by launching a ball into your environment, bouncing it off of walls and obstacles the user has placed! It serves as a hands-on demonstration of force equations, allowing your students to implement their physics knowledge to solve 3D puzzles by landing the ball at an exact point in the room. This app demonstrates how augmented reality lets you bring abstract concepts into the real, physical world around you. Have you tried it? How fun to watch your thesis defense at 2x speed! How painful yet joyful it was to figure out how to present a sophisticated idea to a group of professionals and the general public in a hybrid environment! 🎥Three weeks ago, I defended my thesis, “Utgard Castle: How #Interactive Design Connects the #Queue to a #Locationbased #VR #Simulator”. Utgard Castle is an experimental project I conceived and designed to collect user-test data for the study. Themed after Attack on Titan, it features three floors: the first and second floors are the queue area, and the third floor offers the final VR simulation. (More project info 🔗 - https://lnkd.in/ezRmCP-Q) Besides dealing with a complex IP story, the biggest #challenge for the defense presentation was to clearly demonstrate the queue experience—which integrates #AR elements, group divisions, #immersive theater, and #game mechanics—within a few minutes, while also explaining how user-testing data supported the designs. As an interactive designer, I utilized the “(Game) User Journey Map” tool in combination with simplified floor maps to present the ideas with dynamic spatial transitions. 🔖The most delightful moment for me after the presentation was - Someone from the general public approached me, saying the presentation was neat, they understood everything, and then discussed the concept with me. This is the third time I’ve designed an attraction based on this complex IP, the 100th time I’ve communicated "Utgard Castle", and the Nth time this international student has delivered a public speech on her concept in a second language. It may not be perfect, but it is 100% a #happyending to my MFA program! :) ______________________________________________________ 🙌Thanks again to the guidance and encouragement from John Yelvington (#SCADamp), SuAnne Fu, William Gorgensen, Josh Steadman, Wan Chiu, Scott LaRocca, and Erin Chase at Savannah College of Art and Design. #thesisdefense #themedentertainmentdesign #interactivedesign #attractiondesign #presentation #MFA

Hey Connections , I am excited to share that I have Just wrapped🚀 up an exciting project where I developed a 3D simulation 🌍 app for VR using C#, Unity Engine, Vuforia, Blender, Unity Asset Store,Google Cardboard and Sketchfab! 🎮 With this app, users can explore and interact with planets in a fully immersive 360° environment using a VR Box. By pressing S key on a physical keyboard(Which will be connected with VR Box via bluetooth), users can switch between planets and get detailed information about the each and every Planet —displayed neatly in a square info box. Here is a brief video through my PC . I press S key on a physical keyboard I switched to a planet and get detailed information about the Planet —displayed neatly in the square info box.It was more immersive and cool in VR Box . Here are some highlights: 🌌 Simulated planetary and star motion using Unity's physics engine. 🌐 Imported Google VR Box into Unity for full 360° navigation. 🖼️ Applied stunning textures to the 3D models using resources from Sketchfab and NASA 3D. This project was a great opportunity to push my skills in AR/VR, 3D modeling,Data Structure and Algorithms and C# development, while bringing the wonders of space closer in a fun, interactive way! #Unity3D #CSharp #Algorithms #Blender #SoftwareDevelopment #AppDevelopment #SpaceExploration #NASA3D #GameDevelopment #Datastructures #3DSimulation #VirtualReality #Vuforia #ImmersiveTech #TechInnovation #PhysicsInGames #InteractiveLearning #SpaceTech #ARVRDevelopment #3DVisualization #STEMTech

💬 The Power of Practice—In Both Tech and Therapy In coding, we debug errors to improve the program. In stuttering therapy, individuals practice their speech to improve fluency. While the challenges might be different, the approach is the same—practice makes perfect. That’s why I’m developing VR simulations that allow people to practice real-world conversations in a safe space. It’s a powerful way to build confidence and enhance communication skills, all while using technology to overcome real-life hurdles. The parallels between coding and communication are fascinating—both require patience, persistence, and a little bit of troubleshooting. 🚀 #VRTherapy #StutteringAwareness #TechForGood #InnovationInHealthcare #Unity3D #PracticeMakesPerfect
