It’s intern season! Here are the top 3 things that I did that I feel helped me successfully convert my summer internship into my full time job (tips apply to all industries): ✨ Have bias for action Be the intern that embodies proactivity. Show how you are adding value by being alert for opportunities that you can help support. ✨ Ask for forgiveness not permission This is very specifically a reminder for people like myself who are afraid of being “too much.” Own the space that you have as an intern and show that you know your worth with confidence. ✨ Document and socialize your work Keep track of those wins and share them with your manager and other people on the team! Get the visibility of other people that can vouch for you when the time comes to convert interns. One of the most common questions we've heard is how you can make the most out of your internship? Julia Fernandez answers this from a Product Designer point of view which is basically the same for all interns including software engineers with one additional side note: be a productive engineer by writing code that solves problems and review code from others even if you're only asking questions.

🌟 My Journey to Writing a Master’s Thesis at Specific Companies 🌟 Ever since I stepped into my UX master’s program, I had two crystal-clear goals: Try to keep working while studying + Write my thesis at companies I admired. It wasn’t just a dream; it was my roadmap (Refer to the pic; my figjam file written 2 years ago) Here’s how I turned that dream into reality: 1. Early Integration ⏰ Upon moving to Stockholm for my studies, I immediately sought part-time internships, successfully securing positions at two companies while juggling my coursework during the first year. 2. Elevating the Experience 🚘 My third semester was a breakthrough, landing a paid UX internship at Volvo Cars. This was a significant step towards immersing myself in a larger organizational context. 3. Thesis Collaboration 🗣 With Volvo Cars firmly in my sights for my thesis, I leveraged my internship to explore opportunities within the company. I have knocked the door at different teams and people. After 20+ fikas within the company, I eventually have secured a position to conduct my thesis research there. And here I am, still on this adventure. 🌠 People keep asking me for tips on finding industry opportunities while studying, so I thought I’d share my journey. The systemic issues within the design industry run deep. I love what Ana Rita Morais is doing to bring to light the inequalities that designers often face and must adhere to in order to begin their careers. The risk for entry becomes high as designers are forced to trade off financial stability/safety for the acceptance into these work environments. I've been talking to a lot of designers lately who are struggling right now and are willing to "take any position available" in order to stay in this industry. We talk about how they can navigate the design industry, differentiation beyond portfolios, understanding business, and, what I think is currently ignored - learning how to build a sustainable career for themselves. One where they don't have to compromise their financial security, mental health or creative health in order to find a meaningful place for themselves in this field. #design #equityandinclusion #representationmatters #career
