Annual biopharma R&D spending is approaching $300 billion, roughly 27% of the ~$1 trillion in annual biopharma revenue. It's sobering to consider that the majority of this spending is on programs that will never directly benefit patients, given that 90% of new drugs fail in clinical trials. That's the crux of the productivity crisis in therapeutic R&D. Improving late-stage success rates with better predictors of drug efficacy is paramount to getting the most efficacious novel drugs to patients at lower cost.

Our paper titled: "Model-informed drug discovery and development approaches to inform clinical trial design and regulatory decisions: A primer for the MENA region" Was recently published at the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal, this paper is meant as tutorial/primer for those interested in the filed in the MENA region. We discuss how the field of M & S has evolved over the years and how it can be applied during drug development. Are there financial benefits to employing digital endpoints in clinical trials? Joseph A. DiMasi et al. explored this question in their recent paper. 📈 They highlight that despite the need for an upfront investment in digital endpoints, endpoints yield strong expected net present value (eNPV) and ROI for the pharmaceutical industry. ⬆️ When digital endpoints are used, the increase in eNPV for phase 2 trials ranged from $2.2-$3.3 million, with ROIs ranging from 32-48%.
