In the last three years, we have seen: 💰 A 15% increase in rental housing prices 💰 Home energy costs increased by 22% (between Aug 2022 and Aug 2023) 💰 33% of renters across the province living in unaffordable housing 💰 10x increase in shelter utilization outside of St. John's At Choices for Youth, we see the impact of these challenges every day through the experiences of the youth who we support, and we simply cannot meet the demand. In the last year, we housed 179 young people, and we currently have 150 youth awaiting housing on our waitlist. At least 26% of those youth have recently arrived in St. John's. In 2022, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and Choices for Youth came together to seek a collective understanding of what's happening across the province, and what solutions would make a difference. Through statistical analysis and dialogue with dozens of service providers, municipal leaders, and folks with lived experience, we developed key recommendations, including: 🏡 Growing housing stock, including repairs of existing provincial housing units, and investing in an inventory of land to facilitate affordable housing development 💲 Investing in enhanced and streamlined rental supplements that ensure that homeless individuals have what they need to access housing in our current rental market 🏡 Investing in multi-year funding for non-profit organizations, including those who are operating affordable housing AND those who are providing critical mental health, food security, and wrap-around supports to serve those who are housing insecure 💲 Allowing expanded powers for municipalities to replace tax sales of properties with options to sell properties for a nominal fee to community organizations for repurposing or redevelopment. 🏡 Include non-profit housing in the list of tax-exempt properties under municipal legislation. To learn more and see all the recommendations, check out the report 📑 --> https://lnkd.in/eZ4WPnWs Shoutout to Hope Jamieson, MBA, brilliant researcher and author on this report, as well as Deatra Walsh & Robert Nolan and the MNL team for their leadership and partnership on this work!
In case you missed it – Choices for Youth recently announced the release of a new report "Pull Together: Addressing Housing Insecurity in Rural Newfoundland and Labrador," prepared in collaboration with Municipalities Newfoundland & Labrador 🤝 The report was the topic of discussion on NTV's Issues & Answers with Michael Connors on March 17, where an insightful conversation was led by the report's author Hope Jamieson from Annex Consulting, alongside Jen Crowe from CFY and Rob Nolan from Municipalities NL ✨ Check our media page for a link to the full broadcast to learn more about how we can work together to address housing insecurity in rural areas 👉 https://bit.ly/3wUI1UK #TogetherWeCan

📝 Dignity should be at the core of delivering aid, but too often, people in need face indignity. Pulte Institute for Global Development and IDinsight's Dignity Initiative propose a Dignity Agenda that responds directly to the life experiences of aid recipients. In their #PolicyBrief, they highlight the most pressing improvements needed to respect dignity. These include: 1️⃣ In-person meetings with recipients 2️⃣ Supporting community-based organizations to speak up 3️⃣ Co-design workshops with recipients before implementation. 📝 Read our recommendations in detail ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gf6pywD5

After 2 weeks of internally disseminating the findings of this research to our SCI's donors in Lebanon, I was honored to present them again in front of our global Core Humanitarian Technical Team (CHTT) at Save the Children International. This research is key in providing preliminary evidence regarding the impact of CVA (cash/voucher assistance) on our Protection programming. In collaboration with SC-US and Johns Hopkins University, funded by BPRM, this research (that I personally contributed to) succeeded in emphasizing the impact of cash support in achieving better child protection outcomes.
