Job Assignment Tasks: Where Is the Reasonable Limit? Completing test assignments is a great way to showcase your skills. But what if the task takes more than two hours and involves market analysis, strategy development, or competitor research? Especially in the early stages, when salary and other job conditions haven’t been discussed. Candidates may ask:  • Is it worth investing time and effort without guarantees?  • Is it fair to work “for free” without receiving feedback? Finding balance is crucial: assignments should test skills but not turn into full-scale projects. Respect starts with mutual understanding. When you are just out of school and entering the job market, things can be a bit daunting. The employment market is still good, and there are lots of positions still available, but it has certainly changed in the last few years. One of your greatest competitors for a job that you want at an early stage in your career could be AI. There are many things that AI can do that would potentially eliminate an opportunity for someone just starting their career. So, my best advice to you is to think about what you bring to the workplace that AI couldn't bring. Skills like critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving are skills that you uniquely can bring. Think about times when you have successfully used these skills in your education or work experience, and highlight them. Also, invest in learning more about AI, and talk about your knowledge and experience using it, as many employers are exploring the use of AI. The other advice I would give you is to keep political influences, and controversial subjects out of your interview, and off of your resume. These things could be damaging, and could hurt your chances of winning employment opportunities. It's time to rethink hiring practices that focus solely on a candidate's years of experience. While job descriptions often call for 2-15 years of experience, new graduates and highly experienced candidates are often overlooked. But how can we change this? For new graduates, it's important to sell your unique strengths. Consider highlighting your perspective as a Gen Z, and how that can contribute to a company's business goals. Additionally, your knowledge of AI and experience with tools like Chat GPT can set you apart and bring valuable insights to a team. I had a recent example where a new hire (6 months on the job) demonstrated the value of Chat GPT in marketing to her company and got that approved. For highly experienced candidates, upskilling and reskilling are essential in a world of automation and AI. Showcasing your ability to add value and adapt to new technologies is crucial. Otherwise, you risk being perceived as obsolete and expensive. Cost-saving!   Is it just me, or is anyone else dreading a little what the future will look like?   I think technological progress is fascinating. But people and their emotions will forever fascinate me more 😊   Here’s my take on how we (humans) can continue keeping the recruiting process exactly that – HUMAN.     🇭umour – I remember giggling with candidates during interviews as something amusing spontaneously surfaced – what’s more human than humour? 🇺nderstanding – can you teach robots empathy? Delivering feedback with meaningful empathetic tone or feeling for a candidate who needs to reschedule an interview because their kid got sick… not sure about any programmed robotic empathy skills here… 🇲otivation – one of the coolest parts of being a recruiter (or a human for that matter) is cheering for people! I’m pretty confident that someone out there lands a job today because some incredible recruiter championed and supported them like there’s no tomorrow! Zero doubt. 🇦pproachability –Raise your hand (or your thumb) if you feel the environment a hiring team created had positive impact on how you did in your interviews?! 🇳urturing – being helpful. That’s as human as it gets. By 2027, Gen-Z will be the predominant generation in the workforce. The ability to develop and learn new skills is second only to financial security on Gen Z's list of priorities in a new job. It’s predicted that as AI and technology advance, 50% of current in-demand skills will be obsolete in two years. The average tenure of white-collar Gen-Z workers in Australia is 2.2 years. It follows that if the skills landscape is rapidly changing and the majority of your workforce wants an environment where they can develop these new skills, providing a culture and environment that fosters this is a good way to increase retention. But, having the environment is only part of the puzzle. How do you ensure your people have the ability and drive to learn new skills? After all, it’s no good putting effort into creating a prosperous L&D culture if people won’t capatilize on it. To ensure new hires will thrive in your environment, you need to assess their ‘learnability’. Asking questions during the interview(s) that uncover how people learn new skills, why they learn new skills, and when they last learned a new skill will give you insight into their desire and ability for learning.
