** 7 Lessons in Leadership ** 4. Shared Values makes a difference Follower need to know that the big vision, is in line with their dreams, beliefs, needs and interests. Each one of us have our own beliefs, visions and dreams. They need to know that what they value is in alignment with the big vision. This brings congruence and a good fit within the person, the leader and the broader team. Leaders need to be able to gain the common grounds and values to then bring the team together, this allows for shared vision and values - bringing everyone along on the journey. Sharing with my team was my favourite part of leading.

Building and mentoring a team is a fundamental aspect of effective leadership. It involves creating a supportive environment where individuals can grow, develop, and reach their full potential. By investing in their team members, leaders not only foster talent but also build strong, cohesive units that can achieve great things.

I post this picture because it’s a testament to how leadership is earned. To be a “yellow shirt” on an aircraft carrier, your rank comes off. You aren’t going to inherit the top role on the deck. In fact, you may work for someone much lower in rank. Why? Because leadership is more than knowledge of a certain topic. It’s communication, empathy, drive and a willingness to be humble to move the team forward. A willingness to be human and admit mistakes to support your team no matter what. While the consequences are vastly different in most cases, those same qualities are necessary to be a good leader in any industry. A leader must first be a follower, as the yellow shirt was.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. I’ve had the privilege of working under different leadership styles. Some leaders believed in me, gave me the freedom to express my ideas without judgment, celebrated my small wins, and supported me even when I stumbled. On the flip side, I’ve also experienced leadership that doubted, compared, and criticized—even when I gave my best. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? When a leader trusts their team, it’s empowering. It creates a safe space where people feel valued, take ownership, and often outperform expectations.
