This is an interesting short summary on local seismic risk due to factors beyond a statistical prediction using a Richter Scale only. Geotechnical profiles, topography and recent heavy rain can influence the local damage significantly beyond predicted values. Any hazardous facility globally might benefit from a Seismic Hazard Risk Management Plan, with appropriate retro structural reviews to minimize possible consequences. The concept of one size fits all is no longer a valid approach to assessing seismic risk for say an SMR ( Small Modular Reactor), Wind Farm, TSF ( Tailings Storage Facility ), landslide topography or large storage earth dam or any structure likely to be vulnerable to catastrophic failure due to a resonant vibration or serious vibration or an amplification of seismic motion because of local topography or geotechnical foundation composition or elevated soil moisture content.

🌉 Exciting News from Our Latest Research! 🌉 We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest paper, "Seismic Fragility Analysis of Simply Supported Bridges Considering Uncertainty in Scour Condition." This research delves into the resilience of multi-span reinforced concrete highway bridges, tackling the compounded challenges of scour and seismic threats. In this study, we introduce an innovative probabilistic framework that features a time-dependent scour model refined through Bayesian updating, utilizing real data to improve scour predictions. We also implemented Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis and Monte Carlo simulations to thoroughly assess the uncertainties posed by seismic forces and varying scour conditions. Fragility analysis evaluates the vulnerability of both individual bridge components and the entire bridge system under different scour scenarios. The framework was applied to a real-world five-span bridge in Chile, incorporating actual hydrological and seismic data to gauge performance. Can we determine experimentally seismic fragility curves for our structures in an efficient manner through the use of a novel mechanical clevis connection? Does seismic isolation reduce the seismic vulnerability and the variability of the seismic response compared to a fixed-based structure? What is the most efficient Intensity Measure (IM) for seismically isolated structures? New Publication: Effect of hydrodynamic forces on the seismic SSI of embankment dams Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication Nonlinear seismic analysis of embankment dams is crucial, especially in regions with high seismicity. The lack of rigorous seismic evaluations of these massive structures can lead to catastrophic failures. The earthquake-induced failure of embankment dams is often evaluated by the magnitude of seismic deformations resulting at the crest and other critical locations. Horizontal seismic and vertical gravitational forces are the primary loads considered in general for evaluating the seismic response of embankments during an earthquake event, ignoring the hydrodynamic forces acting on the upstream face. But in cases where the permeability of the upstream portion of the dam is low, accumulation of hydrodynamic forces on the upstream face of the embankment dam may play a significant role in the dynamic response. Besides, it also leads to the generation of excess pore pressure inside the dam body. Consequently, the role of hydrodynamic forces is critical in understanding the seismic response of embankment dams. The study attempts to study the role of hydrodynamic forces on the dynamic response and stability of the embankment dam founded on different foundations. A new paper is out: "STATISTICAL EVALUATION OF STEEL MOMENT FRAMES RESPONSE UNDER CRUSTAL AND SUBDUCTION SEISMIC ENVIRONMENTS" published in the Journal of Building Engineering. We analyzed the influence of the crustal and subduction earthquake mechanisms on the performance of steel moment frames through a robust and comprehensive statistical evaluation. While Incremental dynamics analysis is performed to assess collapse indexes, the core of the study is concentrated on the responses based on as-recorded ground motions to understand the behavior in different recorded seismic intensity levels. Collapse, ISDR, and PFA show interesting differences based on the different seismic environments. Moving forward the seismic characterization of structures subjected to subduction ground motions, aiming to properly estimate and handle the population seismic risk in areas prone to subduction earthquakes.
