Ever wondered why bread is left to rest for sometime in the process of baking? In baking, the dough is allowed to rest so it can rise and expand, developing a flavour and molding into the desired shape. Well, this post isn't about cooking or baking as I am far removed from this practice. It's all about reminding ourselves on the importance of Rest in our lives. Resting, or a period of downtime, is primarily seen as a mark of fragility and weakness or even laziness, in most corporate cultures. However, we fail to recognise the importance of it. Everything in nature has a downtime, including the waxing period of the Moon when it fully grows into the Full Moon, luminous and fluffy as a pancake, as seen from the Earth Headquarters. Of late, while contemplating on the importance of Rest, I came to terms with how people see these two words according to their Mind Maps. "Resting" and being "Tired" can be semantically quite different and can mean different things to different people. I have always been this workaholic person, trying to fit in the race of the world, to make things happen. However, with the growing years, "Rest" and "Rejuvenation" has made their way to my life, like a beautiful Feminine Presence, allowing me to slow down and pause to smell the roses on my journey. 🌹 And I cannot begin to reiterate the point how it speaks to my Parasympathetic Nervous System. Rest has helped me heal in no other way I could have fathomed. It has slowed my breathing patterns down, helping me to rethink, re-evaluate and revise certain plans in life which was otherwise not possible in the constant pursuits of my goals. Predominantly, it has made me appreciate Life and My Values and what I essentially do not want, in the hurry and scurry of the busy world. It has made me love who I am, in all of its totality. Rest has helped me develop a flavour of my own and who I am. Although, that's my definition of "Rest", it may be quite different for you. Week 7 June 30- July 6 Last week, my mom cooked a famous street food - cart noodle soup. I was very eager to try. After a sip of the soup, memories pour in immediately. I used to buy them after work to share with my grandma and my family. That sip of the soup, not only brought back memories but also a feeling of serenity, which I never noticed before eating other food. Therefore, I decided to look into it this week if there is a relationship between comfort, nostalgic food and mood.   Through reading the research articles by Kate Simpson, Douglas J. Angus, and Megan F. Lee in 2024, food can act as a gateway to nostalgia memories. Often, those memories have an emotional value, such as a reminder of one’s mother. However, nostalgic emotion can be bittersweet. For most people, it evokes a positive mood, but for some, it may evoke negative emotions such as sadness and loneliness. Nonetheless, the positive aspect of nostalgia usually outweighs the negative and participants reported an elevation on their moods. Moreover, to apply the knowledge so far I have learned in this course. Familiarity feeds fondness. Familiar food also offers us a sense of security and calmness that we inherited from our ancestors. We tend to have neophobia- to avoid unfamiliar food in our nature. Furthermore, since the soup noodle is high in carbohydrate, it boosts up my serotonin level that might contribute to the sense of calmness I felt during and after the meal (Myers & DeWall, 2021, p.390).  Nostalgia food does boost up my mood at least for the night, and I enjoyed the taste and experience, I have to remind myself not to overeat.
