On October 17, 1888, Capital Savings Bank opened its doors in Washington, D.C., becoming the first Black-owned bank in the United States. Richard T. Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard University, was one of the visionaries behind the bank. His leadership and commitment to economic empowerment helped establish a financial institution that served a community excluded from mainstream banking. ⚫️Why It Was A Gamechanger: Provided savings accounts, loans, and support for Black-owned businesses. Fostered homeownership, entrepreneurship, and generational wealth in a segregated society. Empowered African Americans to take control of their financial futures. ⚫️ Its Legacy: Though it closed in 1902, Capital Savings Bank laid the foundation for future Black-owned financial institutions, showing the power of community-driven economic progress.
