Architecture as a Cultural Value - review of a great night for de Architect NL with Uri Gilad and Edzo Bindels on how buildings claim their cultural value by accommodating future histories.

Lately I’ve been reflecting on the fate of empty buildings in Rotterdam, for Vers Beton. Many buildings can’t be rented out as housing anymore because of their bad shape. In May this year, the municipality alone owned 152 such buildings. Numbers for housing corporations, who hold a significant part of the city’s building stock, are unknown, let alone those for private landlords. This is a serious issue in a city that grapples with a housing crisis. Only more serious as timelines for renovations get longer with stricter requirements to make the renovated buildings more energy-efficient. Getting permissions and gathering the necessary finances now takes a minimum of five years. Sealed-off doors and metal boards in windows make areas look – and turn – rougher, so the municipality and housing corporations are increasingly looking for alternative solutions to fill up the empty spaces in the meantime. The IJzerblok in Rotterdam-West was a positive story of such a solution: the art academy WDKA, and the housing corporation Woonbron made an informal deal, thanks to which over 90 starting artists got studio spaces for free. Read the story, with a showcase of artworks created in the four-year-long residency, here: https://lnkd.in/e3KCd6_s Recent developments for Stad in de maak, an initiative that offers „vacant property management with a social touch” (it sounds much better in Dutch: „sociaal leegstandbeheer”), are much less positive. The organisation has existed for over 12 years but, with its project in Vlaardingen coming to an end, it hasn’t found any new buildings closeby to Rotterdam so far. It just so happens that these kinds of initiatives make Rotterdam the place I want to call my chosen home. I melancholically called this series „the summer of goodbyes” and I hope that I soon get to write about some welcomes.

My newest animation for Studio JV and Vanguard Properties Portugal , presenting the concept of Portaria Torre, in Comporta - PT: a fusion between architecture and landscape, with an access path following the topography. It's a conceptual origami, defined by a rational triangular roof that shelters a public program for visitors to the west and a staff area to the east.

As you can see in the video, in which the manager of the crematorium in Zaanstad talks about the renovation, a radical transformation is needed. Wonderful assignment in which we were able to translate our ambitions for a sustainable transformation for the establishment of the crematorium in Zaanstad (and future locations) by applying biophilic design principles. Landscape is integrated into the design, daylight is used and the seasons are made experienceable. A wooden structure around the building also gives identity to the building, sunlight is regulated, annoying logistics are prevented and the ceremony spaces have a direct relationship with the landscape with thematic gardens. The landscape is a design by MADMA urbanism+landscape. Green zones are also created deep in the building. These green zones are combined with large mirrored walls that make the greenery visible deep into the building. By adding technology to these mirror walls in the interior, on which photos of the deceased and messages for relatives can be displayed, a unique combination of nature and technology is created for PC Uitvaart, making personal ceremonies possible.

The CaixaForum in Valencia is a space dedicated to spreading culture in the widest sense of the word (history, art, science and technology) through exhibitions and various types of other events. “Paradoxically, the most surprising CaixaForum is the one that is hidden, the one that will least modify the city in which it is constructed. Maybe it is also the one that will make it dream even more", Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, El País. The new design by Enric (arquitecto) ruiz geli and the Cloud 9 studio has conceived the 6500 m² exhibition space, which is surrounded by water, as a living organism within which different elements can be found. The "cells" of this organism are made up of two exhibition halls, an auditorium with seating for 300 people, a bookshop and a restaurant. Mapei was part of this project as one of our adhesive systems was employed to create a colourful ceramic covering.
