The newest online-only school greenlighted by the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools comes with a twist: The academic curriculum will be taught entirely by AI. Charter schools — independently operated but publicly funded — typically get greater autonomy compared to traditional public schools when it comes to how subjects are taught. But Unbound Academy’s application, which proposes an “AI-driven adaptive learning technology” that “condenses academic instruction into a two-hour window,” is a first for the model. (Unbound’s founders have been running a similar program at a “high-end private school” in Texas, which appears to be in-person.)

It's time for L&D to really start to think out of the box. We're so stuck in the school model: we conceive of a "learner" (student) who "learns" (studies) a "skill" (subject) by taking "modules" (courses), reading "guides" (textbooks), passing "assessments" (tests), and awarding "certificates" (degrees.) And then come the ... "metrics" (standardized scores)! Now we're using AI to do more of the same: replace one course with a faster-made course, or a real instructor with an avatar. Here's the thing, though: even *real* students don't learn that way! The school model was designed to institutionalize child care, not educate human beings. And should we truly be in the business of educating learners? What if we drop the L from L&D?
