As Guernsey faces a sudden onrush of ‘quick builds’, including potential prefabrication, the question has to be asked, “how do we avoid losing the unique character and cultural expression present in our built environment?” Understanding how cultural identity can be captured and expressed through architecture is an essential part of our journey. Before we roll out a carpet of mediocrity, let’s understand ourselves and what we stand for and fight to conserve and enhance our uniqueness as a place. This paper makes for good reading: https://lnkd.in/esH-DsQU

Brava to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture's first recipients of the Fellowship to Advance Equity in Architecture: Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia / WAI Architecture Think Tank. Their work references "racism, settler-colonialism, disability studies, ecological justice, and other topics germane to the pedagogies of the built, destroyed, and imagined environments that comprise architecture and related fields." I am looking forward to lecture on transformation and systemic change.
Today Tamara Kalantajevska and I hold a lecture Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) ETH Zurich. We discuss the ways that the practise of architecture is shaped by forces outside of the architect's profession and what that means for our potential to #transform buildings rather than #demolish them. We also look into the tactics and advocacy that one can take to flip the system. You can find a direct to the lecture here that takes place at 18:00 Central European time (Zurich) https://lnkd.in/dvT-6CPB? Following the lecture you can find it as part of a House Europe lecture series here: https://lnkd.in/dWWkJjzw

EA thought of the day... “Consequently, since this study is so vast in extent, embellished and enriched as it is with many different kinds of learning, I think that men have no right to profess themselves architects hastily, without having climbed from boyhood the steps of these studies and thus, nursed by the knowledge of many arts and sciences, having reached the heights of the holy ground of architecture.” — Vitruvius, The Ten Books on Architecture #EnterpriseArchitecture
