Join VISR and Metro Nashville Historical Commission for Archaeology Day at Sunnyside this Saturday! We will bring our geophysics equipment and survey tools for demos and there will be a participatory excavation on site. We'll also have maps showing recent VISR geophysics projects at Sunnyside, the Nashville City Cemetery, and the William Edmondson Homesite & Gardens. It's supposed to be a beautiful Saturday, so drop by if you can!

Concrete scanning systems aren't just used for locating items under concrete. Over the past few years, archaeologists and forensic specialists have been using GSSI's handheld GPR systems as a key tool for non-invasive investigations. In the picture below, the StructureScan Mini XT and Palm XT antenna are being used to obtain information relating to buried cultural resources. 🌟 Exciting News: Surveyors Week 2024 Is Here! 🌟 We will kick off Surveyors Week 2024 by discussing one of the vital roles of surveying in Archaeology. Archaeology uses map regression, comparing maps from different periods of the same area. This can reveal past structures that were recorded but are no longer visible as surface features. Using modern maps to re-project earlier maps can help locate these features by using survey techniques. Stay tuned for more throughout the week! #surveyorsweek #archaeology #surveyor #surveyortechniques

Back safe and sound from the 2024 (#York #AARG) Aerial Archaeology Research Group meeting, where I presented on the evolving role of airborne observer-based prospection in today’s tech-driven world. Big thanks to the organizers, committee, and everyone for the great feedback. I think it’s time to open up a serious conversation on the non-technical aspects of how technology is shaping both non-invasive and traditional archaeology. How can we better understand our role in this shift and move forward effectively, without getting stuck in a loop?

Dendrochronology provides highly accurate dating of wooden artifacts and structures by analyzing the growth rings in trees, offering insight into past human activities and environmental conditions. Learn how archaeologists use this precise method to date ancient wood, reconstruct past climates, and complement other techniques like radiocarbon dating. Key points covered: What is dendrochronology and how does it work? Applications in dating wooden artifacts and historical structures. The advantages and limitations of dendrochronology. Dendrochronology's role in environmental reconstruction. How dendrochronology is used with radiocarbon dating. If you're interested in archaeological methods or the science behind dating ancient materials, this video is for you! Archaeology Conference 2024 | Day Two https://lnkd.in/ey_Q7HBe The Archaeology Conference is an annual forum organised and hosted by Zayed National Museum to share research, discussion and recognition of achievements in the field within the United Arab Emirates. The 2024 edition represents a significant milestone since archaeological work in the UAE began, leading to the theme “65 Years of Unearthing Our Past”. Across two days, a distinguished panel of national and international experts will showcase the UAE’s rich history and the latest archaeological explorations in the region. The proceedings will yield a wealth of new insights and data across several important areas, including climate challenges, satellite imaging and near-surface geophysics, and digital engagement of Al Ain’s 3,000-year-old water systems, aflaj. The aim is to highlight key findings from past and recent excavations while disseminating emerging knowledge about ongoing explorations. For those in the scientific field, the conference also provides an opportunity to make new connections and strengthening existing relationships, yielding further collaboration opportunities and more new discoveries.
