A week late for the Earth Day party, but you know when you're in the doctor's office or hospital and there's all kinds of medical waste created from every visit, procedure or test? Like me, you've probably thought that there must be a way that we can do better for the planet. We can. My PA Consulting teammates put together this outstanding piece about designing for sustainability in medtech. And no, we didn't print it. /// #innovationeconomy #sustainability #medtech #boston #design https://lnkd.in/e9FqwPmZ

DORC is committed to environmental responsibility, and one of our latest initiatives involved mapping greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1, 2, and 3) in the ophthalmic supply chain. In order to meet sustainability expectations, many healthcare organizations have the ambition to map their impact on the environment, climate and the earth, and as we're taking proactive steps to understand and reduce our impact on the planet, we eagerly share the key insights gained from this process with the other industry players. Yesterday we took part in the Healthcare Congress 2024 (Zorgcongres 2024 by Nevi) aimed at exploring the future of healthcare, promoting sustainability and stimulating innovation: Sammar Noor and Erik van Raaij presented the key learnings from DORC’s journey in mapping scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, offering valuable insights for healthcare organizations. Together we pave the way for a greener, healthier future!

How can your hospital make a real, measurable impact on sustainability? I’m proud to see how at Philips we’re making a real, measurable impact on sustainability by focusing on circularity: use less, use longer, use again. This approach enables us to support healthcare systems in reducing their environmental footprint, while never compromising on high-quality care. From innovative service models that extend the life of medical equipment, to EcoDesign that prioritizes energy efficiency and responsible end-of-use management, #circularity is proving to be a powerful tool in reducing CO2 emissions. It’s not just about reducing waste; it's about creating long-term value for both hospitals and the planet. Baroness Gillian Merron, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Patient Safety, has introduced a roadmap to phase out avoidable single-use medical technologies by 2045, shifting towards a circular system focused on reuse, remanufacture, and recycling. Backed by Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, this UK wide plan promotes circularity in MedTech to extend product lifespan, improve patient care, support a net-zero NHS, and drive innovation. The roadmap sets four key goals: boost UK growth, strengthen NHS resilience, reduce waste and emissions, and cut costs. It outlines 30 actions, including encouraging behavioural change, developing new standards, enhancing recycling infrastructure, and fostering scientific partnerships.
