The three best books I read in the first half of this year are: 1. "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown For everyone who would like to do less and better, but instead find themselves doing more and feeling that it's not of the quality they'd like. "Black Box Thinking" by Matthew Syed About why failures can make us better. About those who made a lot of mistakes (like James Dyson, who made 5127 prototypes before producing his first bagless vacuum cleaner). "Where the Forest Meets the Stars" by Glendy Vanderah A novel that shows there is more magic in our lives and sometimes it's worth trusting the heart over the mind. Beautiful, touching, wise. 2025 is off to an incredible "Boom" with lots of "Pow!" Earlier this month I answered a phone call from New York City! Then another call from London, UK. Yes - Penguin Publishers Group got wind of my upcoming movie, The Riverside Strangler, which is slated for release later this year! Turns out, they made one thing clear on our calls: "Paul - you need a book out before your movie is released!" Yes, one of the world's biggest book publishers sees tons of potential in my work that will, as they put it, "Grip audiences across the USA, Canada, the UK, and beyond!" So, here I am this afternoon, holding up an early version of my "psychological horror" book with the cover design! Most people get this wrong about bestselling book lists 😮💨 Bestseller lists are like filters. In a world where your readers have INFINITE possibilities, a bestseller list is a filter for their very FINITE attention. When they see your book on the bestseller list, it immediately signals to them that your book is credible, compelling, and worth their time. Sure, some authors might treat bestseller lists as a vanity project. But mission-driven messengers see bestseller lists as an impact-maximizing endeavor because it helps them reach more people and make a bigger impact.

When your work is chosen to be displayed first in every line, it's a special feeling. Amazon Books did it, and so did every physical bookstore. Usually, the credit for a book's success goes to the writers. However, as the book cover designer for the best-seller Yaar Batohi, I’m going to take a little credit... just a tiny bit. Jokes aside, designing a book cover is a huge responsibility. Capturing attention and compelling a reader to pick up the book and explore it is the designer’s job. Pretty cover aside, this book was an easy read with slice-of-life stories. Something that stayed with me is how Yeongju, the main character, believes that bestsellers are the reason why the publishing industry has lost its diversity. It is why she removed the bestseller list in her bookshop and does not restock them when they are sold out, instead choosing to promote other less popular books with similar themes in their place. It’s pretty ironic since I picked this book up because it's a bestseller.
