With Mother’s Day coming up, many of us are working on the perfect plan to celebrate our moms. Some, however, are trying to forget the holiday altogether, as it can serve as a painful reminder of loss. Regardless of how long ago the loss took place, spending Mother’s Day without mom may never feel easy or any less difficult than the earliest months after her passing. As counterintuitive as it sounds, finding ways to celebrate may be just what you need to make it through the day. Christmas is an exciting and magical time for children, but can be worrying and daunting if they have parents who have separated and they are therefore, unsure who they will see and when 🎅 Here are our top three tips for the festive season and how to avoid disputes if you are separated to help your child/ren feel safe and secure 🫶 1. It’s all about the Planning Planning is key and it will really help and reassure your child/ren if they know what they are doing over the Christmas holidays, when, and with which parent. Work out a plan that fits around both your schedules, but ultimately works for your child/ren and their different ages. Look at which priorities are important to maintain for your child/ren, e.g. upholding certain customs, traditions or religious practices, and realise that the other parent may want to do things a little differently. Look in advance at Christmas gifts to make sure you don’t double up on the same present and that extended family will also want to arrange presents. Consider how your children will spend time with extended family and work out a rota that hopefully suits everyone. 2. Prioritise your child/ren’s needs Christmas is meant to be a happy and wonderful time for children, especially when they are younger and if it is safe, they will benefit from having a loving, meaningful relationship with both parents. These bonds need to be encouraged and promoted to keep reminding them that they are loved by both of their parents. 3. Listen to your child/ren The last thing your child/ren want over Christmas is to hear you fight, so, when thinking about avoiding a dispute, it can really help to hear the voice of your child or child/ren and what they would want? They can often feel guilty about spending time with the other parent, especially if they feel that the other parent is unhappy with the arrangements. Work together and let them know that it was your choice to support their best interests and wishes in the arrangements.
