Delivering new general purpose #frigates for #Australia presents significant challenges. The recent Independent Review of the Royal Australian Navy surface fleet raised more questions than answers. https://lnkd.in/gJ9M_8pv Shephard Media There is no confirmation yet from Defence Australia whether the 'Tier 2' ship designs are a procurement shortlist or for general guidance. The four options seem limited and the selection looks like a Wikipedia exercise. Meanwhile Babcock International Group is talking to Defence about the Type 31 frigate and NAVAL GROUP said the 'Tier 2' frigate are "second rate"! Haha. What is the industrial strategy? Will the ships be modified with an Australianisation of the design or delivered close to the existing design employing indigenous systems? It is a case of speed of delivery vs compatability and there is no right choice. Can the ships deliver the right capability? If vessels be used for seaborne trade protection or for defending Australia's northern approaches, or both? These require a lot of capability on a small ship. OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) has exercised an option for building the fourth new-generation submarine related to the U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) program for the Italian Navy (Marina Militare Italiana), which was assigned to FINCANTIERI. The unit has a total value of approximately 500 million euros, including the related Integrated Logistic Support and In-Service Support. The signature also activates all other options that complete the maintenance support for the submarines already contracted. The U212NFS submarines will by highly innovative, with significant design modifications that will all be developed independently by Fincantieri, which holds the role of Design Authority and Prime Contractor, in accordance with the Navy requirements. The program responds to the need to secure adequate underwater spatial surveillance and control capacity, considering the future complex scenarios of underwater operations and the fact that the end of the operational lifetime of the four “Sauro” class submarines currently in service is drawing near. The U212NFS submarines will also join the four operational U212A class submarines, including the Romei which is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance at the Muggiano shipyard. 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐡𝐦+𝐕𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝟏𝟐𝟔 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬   We have reached another milestone on the F126 frigate project for the German Navy. At the end of June, we signed the contract with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the order of two further F126 multi-purpose frigates. And now, we have signed the receipt of the confirmation for the two additional ships with our Hamburg-based partner Blohm+Voss. The shipyard will be responsible for the construction and outfitting of the ships.    The continued cooperation with Blohm+Voss B.V. & Co. KG emphasises the fact that the F126 frigates will be built entirely in Germany and by German shipyards. Suppliers throughout Germany will also benefit from the order.    Two additional F126 frigates will expand and modernise the surface fleet of the Navy Command of the German Navy | Marinekommando Deutsche Marine The highly complex project maintains and strengthens the key technology of naval surface shipbuilding in Germany and expands it further. In addition, two more ships of the same class mean many practical benefits.
