Amasus contract with Bound4Blue for world’s largest suction sail on general cargo vessel - Amasus, one of Europe’s leading players in the shortsea, bulk, general cargo, offshore and heavy lift segments, has signed a fresh eSAIL® (suction sail) contract with Spain’s bound4blue. Under the new agreement, a 22-meter unit will be retrofitted on a 90-meter, 3,000 dwt vessel at Astander Shipyard in Santander, scheduled for mid-2025. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 Multraship’s Eline Muller and Willem Spijker connected with over 140 members of the European #towage community to discuss the industry's future and today's critical challenges, especially regarding emissions. 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 This year's ETA Conference shed light on the EU Emissions Trading System (#ETS) and the Monitor, Reporting and Verification (#MRV) regulations. These regulations are pivotal for the #maritime sector's #decarbonisation goals and for service providers like #Multraship to understand our role in fostering a sustainable industry without compromising operational efficiency. However, the MRV regulations set to be enforced from 1st January 2025 may impose a significant administrative and financial burden on tug- and workboat owners and operators. The ambiguity surrounding the definition of 'offshore vessel' and which vessels from 400 GT will need to comply adds to the challenge of preparing for proper implementation and budgeting. 𝗡𝗼 ‘𝗢𝗻𝗲-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝘁𝘀-𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’ There is no 'one-size-fits-all' alternative fuel solution for our industry yet, particularly for tugs, workboats and salvage craft that operate both offshore and in port(s). Issues such as the availability of alternative fuels and storage/tank capacity are examples of the challenges we face. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗲 Despite these challenges, Multraship is dedicated to sustainable operations while ensuring we can respond to any incident. SAFEEN Group Pioneers with First Electric Tug Trial in the Middle East Shipping Arabia, May 21, 2024 — SAFEEN Group, under AD Ports Group, has initiated a groundbreaking trial of the first electric tug in the Middle East at Khalifa Port, its flagship facility. This innovative step was announced during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards 2024 in Dubai. The Damen RSD-E Tug 2513, an all-electric harbor tug, is set to revolutionize marine services with its zero emissions from "Tank to Propeller." This tug not only promises operational efficiency with its 70-ton bollard pull capable of maneuvering the largest vessels but also offers cost savings through reduced maintenance needs compared to its diesel-powered counterparts. Initially, the tug will operate with generators that meet the latest IMO Tier 3 emission standards, providing a more fuel-efficient solution than traditional ASD tugs. This initial phase is part of SAFEEN Group’s broader strategy to formalize the electrification of its marine fleet. Plans for the near future include the establishment of a shore charging facility at Khalifa Port, designed to deliver 1.5 MW of power for charging. This development will enable the tug to leverage its full electric capabilities and significantly cut down the carbon footprint associated with maritime operations. Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster at AD Ports Group, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, "Integrating electric tugs into our operations reflects our commitment to sustainable maritime practices both locally and globally. Introducing The Middle East’s First Electric Tug. SAFEEN, part of AD Ports Group, has signed an agreement for the lease and purchase of an all-electric Damen RSD-E Tug 2513, the first fully electric tug to operate in the Middle East. The new tug, which is just 25 m in length, but has a bollard pull of 70 tonnes, is capable of manoeuvring the largest vessels in service and can undertake two or more assignments before being recharged, which takes just two hours. The vessel is now on its way from Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, where it will be used to handle container ships, car carriers and other traffic. DeepOcean will deploy the vessel for subsea operations such as inspection, maintenance, and repair on Equinor installations. Ottar Mæland, Chief Operating Officer of DeepOcean, described the ship as “the next generation subsea vessel”. “The vessel, named Rem Ocean, will be the 83rd ship built by Myklebust Shipyard, which also has an option to build a second, similar vessel for Rem Offshore. Leiv Sindre Muren, CEO of Myklebust Verft Shipyard, emphasized the significance of the contract as the largest in the shipyard’s history. The project will generate substantial activity for subcontractors, including Skipsteknisk AS and several other Norwegian suppliers." On #modernizationMonday, the spotlight shines on Diesel-Electric propulsion. Not to be confused with hybrid propulsion, the technology has been becoming more popular in adoption. First seen on cruise ships, now cargo vessels are adopting them too. Thecla Bodewes Shipyards has made such a vessel. Named Iana, the multi-purpose vessel will be serving with transtal shipping bv "As informed, the diesel-electric propelled series is fitted with three generator sets of 532bkW each and a divided power with two electric 600 ekW motors, believed to enable ‘more efficient’ fuel consumption. The ships are also said to emit low emissions and require low operational expenditure (OPEX). The shipyard also shared that the Iana and the rest of the batch are “future-ready”, given that they were built with enough space to fit a future use of alternative fuels such as methanol and hydrogen without replacing the electric propulsion system." Other benefits of a diesel-electric propulsion system include: 1. Lower maintenance costs due to need for lesser spare inventories. 2. Reduced need for tugboat assistance when berthing and unberthing, which can result in a reduction of at least USD 10,000 per berthing/unberthing procedure. 3. 📍#LNGShipbuilding📍 ✅ Italian shipbuilder #Fincantieri 🏗 has signed an agreement with cruise giant #Carnival Corporation 🤝 for the design, engineering, and construction of three 3️⃣ new cruise ships for the Carnival Cruise Line brand. ✅ The order is for a new class of liquefied natural gas-(LNG) powered vessels 💧, which will be approximately 👉 230,000 gross tons, the largest ships ever built by Fincantieri and an Italian shipyard 🥇. ✅ With over 3,000 guest cabins, the new vessels will carry almost 👉 8,000 passengers at full capacity. Ahoy, maritime enthusiasts! 🚢 Here's a snapshot from the early days of my marine engineering career, back when I was sailing on Panamax and Aframax tankers. Not all ports roll out the red carpet for every type of tanker, especially the colossal VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) and ULCCs (Ultra Large Crude Carriers). So, how do these behemoths deliver their cargo when they can't dock at most terminals? Enter the fascinating world of Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfers! 🌐 In an STS operation, smaller vessels like Aframax, Suezmax, or Panamax tankers pull up alongside the VLCCs. The cargo is transferred directly between the ships, and then the smaller tanker heads to port to discharge the cargo. In the photo, the vessel on the right is the Aframax I was aboard, and on the left is a towering VLCC. To give you a sense of scale: VLCCs are about three times the length of a football field (that's roughly 330 meters or 1,082 feet)! 🏈 Aframax tankers aren't exactly dinghies either—they measure about 2.3 times the length of a football field (approximately 245 meters or 804 feet). But wait, there's more! Another ingenious method for these giants is the Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) system. Here, a VLCC docks at an SBM located miles offshore, anchored securely to the seabed. The cargo is then pumped through underwater pipelines that can stretch up to 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles) from the terminal to the SBM. Talk about long-distance relationships! 😂 These experiences taught me that in the maritime world, there's always a solution, even if it means thinking outside the dock. 😉 Marine engineers and sailors, I'd love to hear your stories about working with these giants of the sea.
