That you are celebrating a birthday and you have your friends with you to whom you have told them that you will give them some delicious burgers on the barbecue and they are anxiously hungry for their food. Let's take a look at this example in conventional batch production for hamburgers. There are 5 workstations and each station will prepare and add certain ingredients to the burgers. After the first station has 10 halves of rolls with a lettuce leaf, he sends them to the next station. If each work step would take 6 seconds, the halves of the roles in the first station are ready after a minute. The first problem is that while the initial stations are working, the following stations are on hold without adding value and no hamburger will be produced in the 1st 5 minutes. On the other hand, the guests who are your customers are getting more and more impatient. Now let's see what happens if it is produced and continuous flow or one piece flow. Each employee sends the hamburger to the next station immediately after completing his work step. It only takes half a minute until the first hamburger is completely finished. We can see that better coordination of individual production processes in continuous flow means that everyone gets their burgers in just a minute and a half, which is a good thing. But what happens if an employee forgets to wash the salad? Despite the immense advantages of starting a process quickly and the extremely short production times, it should be borne in mind that a single change, such as continuous flow is not the solution to all problems. Piece by piece, production means that the smallest possible unit is expected. Inventories are minimal and tend toward zero, while delivery times are drastically reduced, however. This only works with a highly coordinated, intertwined process. So why should continuous flow be chosen to design production plans? Simply because this great objective and its configuration forms the basis of all the other small objectives that are carried out as part of lean management and continuous improvement. And in addition, the birthday party and your BBQ burgers will be a total success next time.
