Press release For immediate use Alliance of German Science Organisations 11 June 2024 Against a boycott of Israeli science The Alliance of German Science Organisations supports the appeal of the Council of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities of 20 May 2024 to the international scientific community and strongly rejects calls for a boycott of Israeli researchers and Israeli scientific institutions. We consider it discriminatory and misguided to terminate research collaborations with Israeli scientific institutions, to exclude Israeli scientists from international conferences and awards or to reject funding applications from researchers working at Israeli institutions. Such measures are also counterproductive, as they weaken an independent voice of reason in Israel. Israeli universities and scientific institutions are pillars of Israel’s liberal, democratic society; as spaces for free and open discourse, they are particularly important in times of intense debates within Israel about the peace process in the Middle East. The members of the Alliance of German Science Organisations will continue to promote scientific exchange and cooperation with colleagues at Israeli scientific institutions and do their utmost to de-escalate the current situation. Only through dialogue and in the framework of an open and international scientific community can we tackle the pressing problems of our time together. 🇩🇪 🇮🇱 The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities

Last week, we had a splendid day of workshops and and an evening panel discussion at our university about the nexus between science, humanities and the arts in a transdisciplinary context and the meta-competences they share for coping with unforeseen, unknown and unknowable challenges (https://lnkd.in/dN-rg4K8). Over the past two days I happened to have two conversations concerning the consequences of the US-elections for our common European future. Both framed the outcome as a chance, not a setback for Europe to truly shine in a darkening world. I'd like to reflect on that in another post maybe. Here - in the vein of that event - I'd like to make use of the power of art for sense-making that we discussed so fruitfully that day: "Come, my friends, 'T is not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down: It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew. Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." #europe; #europeanunion; #EU; #transdisciplinarity

Let me allow to share our new opinion piece on new options for research and innovation policy in Germany in Table Media. Following yesterday's release of the #Innovationsindikator (https://lnkd.in/dAfVxCrX), Rainer Frietsch and I argue that German R&I policy suffers from a lack of focus on research excellence and difficulties in reaping the benefits of returns to scale and spillovers. 1. There is a need to introduce a real focus on research excellence. This however should not be a zero-sum game where existing resources are simply redistributed. Instead, it must entail a substantial increase in the financing of frontier research, in order to close the gap to leading research organizations world-wide. 2. Not only anectodal evidence e.g. from the DARPA but also quantitative evidence demonstrates the large synergies between civil and defense research. These synergies result from both from dual use and spillovers. The German R&I system however still faces large impediments to reaping these benefits. Despite a heated public debate, a new constructive discourse on the relationship between civil and defense research is badly needed. In response to the "open statement on the actions of the Federal Minister of Education in response to the open letter from Berlin university lecturers" (https://lnkd.in/efgZQrfR) by German professors and researchers, the Federal Minister of Education, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, dismissed her State Secratary Sabine Döring. It's not quite that simple and the story shouldn't end here. First, I still doubt that only Döring is to blame. A thorough, transparent external investigation is required to ensure that Döring was not a "Bauernopfer". Second, and more important, a true leader would apologize and take full responsibility for the wrong actions within the team they lead. The open statement signed by more than 2800 scientists (as of June 17) is a clear sign that a large number of German professors and researchers have lost trust in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under Stark-Watzinger's leadership. A fresh start in the management of the BMBF is necessary. A new leader is needed to save the BMBF's damaged image. Stark-Watzinger has to resign.

Small technical university with great technology background. Recycling/Circular Economy/Sustainability…etc. Setting the switch right
