A Houston-area school district has more than 20x'ed the number of students enrolled in dual credit courses in the last decade by making dual credit courses free for all.
In 2024, Goose Creek CISD have over 4,000 students enrolled in dual credit courses with the local community college. A decade ago, that number was around 150.
Why is this shift to free dual enrollment a massive win?
Underserved communities can now have more opportunities. Moreover, the expansion of courses to include vocational options means students can:
→ Explore different subjects and careers
→ Make informed decisions about their future
→ Transition to employment with minimal debt
Naturally, dual enrollment helps boost community college numbers, making them sustainable for the long term while being able to serve a broader community.
As long as K12, community colleges, and local employers are singing from the same hymn sheet, dual enrollment can land students in real jobs post-graduation that meet the needs of the local economy.
Still, there is a challenge of awareness: many don’t know about the benefits on offer.
That’s why I’ve created PathSpark: to open a student’s eyes to opportunities beyond the traditional route.
I’m happy to chat with any student wanting to learn how dual enrollment could benefit them.
