AN ECONOMY OF PEACE We hear every day about the war economy. Is this inevitable? Can we reverse things and talk about an economy of peace? This is the question that a round table asked during an interreligious conference organized by the Focolare Movement in the Roman Hills. Read here: https://lnkd.in/d_UM7QXV

Time for quite an #academic #throwbackthursday: in 2011, Domenico Moro and yours truly published a book - a collection of essays (in Italian) on the topic "The Government of a Supranational Federal Economy and its Institutions in the European Experience". The idea was to put together key readings on the four pillars that enable to government of a federal economy: State, Market, Currency, and Budget. Thanks to the Centro Studi sul Federalismo, the book was republished in 2014 - 10 years ago! Quite some time has passed, but the key insights remain - the four pillars are still there to indicate which steps are needed to form and steer a supranational economy. Given that vital #europeanelections at the door (crucial to defeat ramping returning fascisms) and the shift of moods towards "the return of the state" in the economy and #industrialpolicy, our book is a good read (if you understand italian or use some AI tool to translate it): it features pieces from Tommaso Padoa Schioppa, Lionel Robbins, Altiero Spinelli, Alberto Majocchi, Alfonso Iozzo, Robert Triffin, and many others. You can find here the table of contents and the intro! And I will share the full book as we get closer to the elections. The Economy of Lack When Davido recently highlighted that Nigeria's economy is in shambles, he wasn't just voicing a personal concern, he was echoing the collective frustration of millions. This isn't merely about economic indicators but the everyday realities that entrepreneurs, consumers, and communities face. A critical imbalance detailed in the "Demand & Waste" chapter of black economics lies at the heart of this crisis. Our nation is rich in demand, demand for innovation, growth, and opportunities. Entrepreneurs are eager to build, the youth are desperate for employment, and communities are yearning for development. Yet, this vibrant demand is met with systemic waste: misallocated resources, inefficiencies, and a lack of strategic vision. This discord creates an economy of lack, where the potential is stifled and progress remains elusive. Having worked with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) for nearly half a decade, I've witnessed firsthand how our economic complexities continue to grow. Our challenges aren't static; they evolve, becoming more intricate as global and microeconomic factors intertwine. Entrepreneurs like us often find ourselves building with less, struggling to keep pace in an environment that doesn't fully support our ambitions. The complexities of global and local economics often leave us operating in a context of scarcity, unable to meet the demands placed upon us. We know that if economic reforms aren't reflected in the day-to-day practices of government, businesses, and consumers, the cycle of lack will persist. We must bridge the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that reforms translate into tangible benefits for all stakeholders. Circling back to Davido's poignant observation, the state of our economy is not just a headline, it's a call to action. We must address the imbalance of demand and waste to transform our economy from one of lack to one of abundance. The man is honest & patriotic. Don't let the media deceive you.

The preliminary estimate of the economic development ministry and the official indicator for output of core sectors of the economy show Russia’s 12-month GDP growth slowed further in August. The August figures were the weakest since the recession following immediately after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The slowdown in output growth was anticipated. Producers face labour shortages and stretched levels of capacity utilisation in many branches. Company costs have also risen in the face of wage pressure and higher prices for production inputs. Increasing consumer prices, in turn, erode purchasing power. The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) has raised its key rate to 19 % which restrains credit growth. Development has weakened in nearly all main sectors of the economy. In August, agricultural production was a key drag on output growth, as it contracted by 15 % y-o-y. Agriculture minister Oksana Lut explained that lower grain harvests this year reflect unfavourable weather conditions and Ukraine’s military incursions into southern Russia. This year’s grain harvest could undershoot previous official forecasts. 12-month growth in retail sales and other consumer-driven services continued to slow in August. The trends were similar also for both industrial production and construction. August 12-month growth in construction was close to zero.

F.A. Hayek’s legacy shows the way toward economic prosperity. Hayek’s work was groundbreaking in the way we think about economics, showing that a market-based economy was more efficient than the alternative. See more about Hayek 👇 https://lnkd.in/gQuNEeiE
