"When you are diagnosed with cancer, it is not unusual to feel powerless, perplexed or even overwhelmed about your treatment options. "But for me, once the initial shock of my bladder cancer diagnosis subsided, I really wanted to be proactive in decision-making about my treatment. I decided to be a co-pilot, not a passenger, in tackling my health challenge. "I set out to learn how best to navigate our complex health system and what questions I needed to ask my medical team. This informed better conversations with the team, enabling me to discuss the latest research and be actively involved in decision-making around my treatment." #4 Supportive Strategies for Cancer patients Facing a cancer diagnosis can be daunting, but a diverse range of support options is available to accompany patients throughout their journey. Navigating the vast amount of information available about cancer can be overwhelming. To ensure that patients acquire reliable information, they can refer to reputable sources such as cancer centers, government health agencies and patient advocacy organizations for accurate, up-to-date information on treatments, clinical trials and care options. Beyond medical treatments, cancer care encompasses emotional, psychological, and practical support. Services like counselling, nutrition guidance, and pain management play pivotal roles in enhancing patients' overall well-being. From local support groups to national programs, numerous networks offer emotional and practical assistance and guidance to patients and their caregivers. Thanks for joining us in the European Week Against Cancer. Let's keep raising awareness! #EWAC2024

Patient advocates and women’s rights leaders from around the world met in Brussels in May 2024, to share strategies to tackle declining screening rates and achieve the goal of eliminating cervical cancer. Thank you Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Blog and especially Matejka Rebolj and Jane Rigney for summarizing the outcomes of the meeting where I was also invited as a guest speaker. "Many countries have by now committed to implementing strategies to eradicate cervical cancer. A world without this devastating disease may indeed be within reach with the right political and societal commitment, and patient advocacy groups are crucial in achieving this historic goal. The time to act is now!" We can end cervical cancer if we, healthcare professionals, scientists, policy and decision-makers, patient advocacy groups, local communities, put our heads together. #endcervicalcancer #prevention https://lnkd.in/eJKfWPKV

Honoring Our Fathers During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (NOVEMBER is BLUE)! Prostate Cancer Awareness Month holds a deeply personal significance for many of us who have lost loved ones to this disease. Losing my father to prostate cancer was a life-altering experience—one that continues to fuel my passion for healthcare advocacy and public health awareness. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, yet early detection can significantly improve outcomes. Unfortunately, in many cases, it is detected late due to stigma, lack of awareness, or limited access to routine screenings. As someone who has experienced the devastating impact of this illness firsthand, I encourage everyone to take proactive steps: Men over 40: Speak with your healthcare provider about screening options. Family members and caregivers: Encourage your loved ones to prioritize their health. Communities: Break the silence and create safe spaces to discuss men’s health openly. In my work, I’ve seen how early interventions can save lives and how education can empower individuals to take charge of their health. This month, let us honor those we’ve lost by amplifying awareness and promoting early detection. To all those who have been affected by prostate cancer, directly or indirectly—you are not alone. Together, we can create a future where fewer families experience the pain of losing a loved one to this disease. #ProstateCancerAwarenessMonth #MensHealth #EarlyDetectionSavesLives #HealthcareAdvocacy

As someone who has lost a parent to the Big C fairly recently this initiative is great to see from Deloitte colleagues Thorsten Engel and Becky Galea 🙌 Are we doing enough to ensure equitable access to cancer screening? 🔍 At Deloitte, we're committed to advancing health equity. That's why we partnered with the Deloitte Health Equity Institute to investigate participation and access to cancer screening in underserved communities. Our new report, focusing on breast and bowel cancer screening in England, sheds light on the barriers faced and provides insights on how to improve screening programs and reduce health inequalities. Read the report here to learn more about our findings and recommendations for a more equitable future in cancer care. https://lnkd.in/e99Kn4Tt #HealthEquity #CancerScreening #Prevention # PrimaryCare #DeloitteImpact
