[Part 2] Design Hiring
Can I have a chat with you before I apply - is a common DM in the hiring season.
That would be the most ideal and informed choice but reality doesn’t work like that.
Hiring managers are busy, typical job descriptions sound generic and you have no clue what the role is - this reality is frustrating. I heart you 🫶
A little nuance that may help you understand job ads better. There are two types of requisitions: focused and ever green.
The demo designer role I posted a few days ago is a focused role. We want someone with a specific set of skills to deliver specific outcomes. It is a very specialised product designer role.
The ever green requisition is generic and is open forever. When we are hiring full stack product designers, interaction designers, researchers these ever green type is used.
When you read the job description you will feel that is exactly what I read in the previous position. Yes, it is the same document behind the scenes.
How different the product designer role is going to get?
Not much.
Their roles and responsibilities are similar across the board. So if you see a user experience or user interface or product design roles, just apply. Your context may change slightly depending on the teams you will be a part of but overarching core competencies and ancillary competencies remain the same.
You will collaborate with your partners and stakeholders. You will create concepts for the problem you are trying to solve. You will discuss with engineering about the technical feasibility. You will use the components from the design system. You will iterate based on feedback. You will present your work in core team meetings and in broad forums. You will evangelise the customer who is not in the room with you. Net net you do the same things again and again as a product designer.
Your hiring manager will help you with the context you will be a part of, specifics when you join the company and till then whatever you learn is very vague 🤷♀️
As a recruitment team, we go through every application that comes in. We funnel the applications carefully. When you don’t pass the funnel, you don’t hear from the team. It is not that the team doesn’t care by not keeping in touch with you, it cares about the applications that are progressing in the funnel. They keep in touch with them a lot more to a point it is irritating for the candidate 😝
When the recruitment team is talking to you often it means they really care about your application. It is an unspoken truth but it is what it is.
Remember one requisition needs only one talented warm body to fill the position. Even if we got 1000 application, what matters is the fitment of that one person finally. So the recruiters are monomaniacally focused in filling the position with the right fit.
My advice is just apply. Don’t worry about talking to hiring manager, getting clarity on the role for ever green JDs and then making decision. Just do it.
