Lately I have been active on the HERO Games company forums. As part of this, I posted a few free samples of my work that I thought might interest that community. We just released the biggest Early Access update so far for The Tribe Must Survive, our Lovercraftian stone-age colony builder! We are immensely thankful for all the player feedback, and are proud to be able to address it already during the Early Access period. Big ups to everyone at Walking Tree Games GmbH and Starbreeze Entertainment! Myself, I took part in addressing the Fear economy of the game by designing and producing a set of events which punish bad Fear management and push things "from bad to worse". This is important for the rogue-lite experience of the game, as it ends failing runs quicker and makes the loop of starting another run much smoother. These events "live" within the game in perpetuity, providing more robust systematic support than what we have done with the events so far. This was a fun creative challenge and really feels like an important "puzzle piece" that has now been slotted in place. The Tribe Must Survive is also a part of the upcoming Lovecraftian sale, so you can get 25% off on the game until April 11th! Designing a board game can be a challenging task. At [Not] Bored Games, we find the most difficult part is to ensure that the core game mechanics work well. The process reminds me of my software developing days, where adding too many features eclipsed the main objective of the product we were creating (ask Ricardo Blanch about this classic product design mistake). To create a successful board game, we must find the perfect balance between game mechanics, winning conditions, rules, story, target audience, and fun. This ensures that the initial idea comes to life as intended. However, it's easy to get lost in the process. So, having a clear game objective, developing the mechanics around it first, and testing the initial ideas through rigorous playtesting is the key for us. As Vogelmann points out in the article, "It's really hard to envision how things are gonna play out — they play out one way in your head, they were perfect in your head, then you get to the table and it falls apart." This underscores the crucial role of playtesting in refining and perfecting game ideas.
