After reviewing numerous job applications, I found myself particularly concerned today. In Papua New Guinea (PNG) and its surrounding regions, the issue of unemployment remains a significant challenge, intensifying the demand for experienced professionals across various sectors. This emphasis on prior experience presents a formidable barrier for recent graduates and entry-level candidates, who often encounter difficulty in securing employment opportunities due to their lack of professional history. Consider a scenario where a recent graduate diligently applies for positions only to face repeated rejection. Each passing year compounds their frustration, as they struggle to gain a foothold in their desired field and contribute meaningfully to the workforce. Meanwhile, there persists a troubling trend where nepotism often supersedes meritocracy, resulting in the hiring of individuals who prioritize personal connections over competence and commitment to organizational success. Managers and leaders bear a significant responsibility in addressing this systemic issue. By implementing robust training initiatives, mentorship programs, and professional development opportunities, they can empower aspiring professionals to bridge the experience gap and thrive in their roles. When everyone find their individual placements, our progress becomes faster. We need not compete with anyone if indeed you know where you belong. The world is large and there are a lot of things to do, just focus on your responsibilities and do what you can to contribute towards national transformation. The making of a better Nigeria is the responsibility of all and until we all find our place and play our roles, just like a jaw saw puzzle, if your role is missing, the equation of national transformation is not balanced. You are a fixed variable in the equation and you must play your role for progressive development.

Why Do We Work? Means to an End or Passion for Impact? As I reflect on my own journey, I can’t help but consider the deeper question: Why do we work? For many graduates from Nigerian universities, the focus often seems to be on securing a job after school—a means to an end. In contrast, many graduates from the Western world approach their careers with a vision of impact, innovation, and job creation. This difference in mindset can significantly shape our professional landscapes. While the pursuit of stable employment is crucial, what if we shifted our perspective to prioritize passion and purpose? Graduates in Nigeria often face a challenging job market, which can narrow their focus to merely finding a job. However, those who embrace a mindset centered on impact can drive change, innovate, and create opportunities—not just for themselves but for others as well. I was recently interviewed for the position of the Director for a Research Centre within a PNG University. The job description and experience (research and publication) suited me very well. I had a zoom interview with the senior management of the university and I was quitely confident that I answered the questions well. One of the questions that stood out for me was: "How much are you willing to accept to relocate from overseas to come back to PNG?" I told the panel how much I was taking (in my current role) in US dollars terms then told them that I was not willing to accept anything less than PNGK100,000.00 per annum. This is less than what I am currently taking in PNG kina terms. I was informed by the panel that they will give me a feedback in a few weeks. The 'few weeks' turned to months. So I emailed the HR contact, enquiring about the status of my application. No email response nor an acknowledgment. After almost another month, I sent a second email. No response nor an acknowledgement. Then I found out through my network that another person had already been appointed for the position. I have yet to get a feedback from the interview and perhaps a reason why my application was rejected. The feedback would be helpful for me to prepare me should I apply elsewhere for a similar role. Or maybe I was asking too much (PNGK 100,000.00 for the position of a Director of a University Research Centre).

Last week, I had the privilege to attend an online session chaired by Zambia's Ambassador to the United States, Chibamba Kanyama. This session was mainly about #personal #skills #auditing, especially for #young_people in today's dynamic and fast-paced world. The ambassador said that, the world as a global village that it is today is an opportunity for anyone in the world to create a change anywhere, but it takes the right skills. My takeaways were as below: 1) Youths must regularly sharpen their skills and frequently audit their skill set. 2) #Artificial_intelligence should be leveraged in both skill acquisition and other opportunities that come with it. 3) A degree acquired from a university may be helpful in understanding a profession, but skills are what employers look for, opposed to academic qualifications alone. 4) It is not unnecessary to take #certificate_courses despite possessing higher qualifications, because certificate courses offer #functional_skills_training, which you may need for specific corporate roles. 5) Passion grows with knowledge and skill, highlighting the need to explore beyond one's areas of passion alone. 6) Be in an environment that supports your #growth and leave if that is not the case. 7) The world is looking for the best and once you start working on your skills to be among the best, the world will recognize and reward you. 8) Never be content with the skills and knowledge you already have. Instead, keep growing and learning. 9) #Generalists (graduates) need functional skills, and opportunities to acquire these are wider than ever. 10) Understand #global_trends, including the skills that the world needs and training yourself accordingly.
