There is a strong market for bull kelp (Durvillaea) due to its exceptionally high levels of alginates and presence of plant biostimulants. With supply limitations and declining availability, there is a strong need to develop commercial #bullkelp #aquaculture to meet demand. This newly launched Phase 2 project is focused on successful outplanting of hatchery-reared juveniles to grow-lines at-sea towards the goal of growing commercially viable bull kelp. This isn't new news, unfortunately. It's time for the government to take a proactive stance and invest in solutions that address the timber supply crisis. Imagine the potential if we channelled significant funding into regenerative resources and the development of new industries right here in Australia. Bamboo stands out as a prime example. Australia even has native bamboos that could be leveraged to support local ecosystems and industry. As the fastest-growing land plant, bamboo offers a renewable, carbon-sequestering material comparable to timber. Unlike traditional forestry, it regenerates without deforestation and captures up to four times more carbon than trees, storing it within its rhizome system. Beyond environmental benefits, fostering a bamboo industry would create jobs and bolster Australia's economic resilience. The long-term gains are undeniable. And in some cases … they grow fruit, too! The team at our Masbate Gold Project is committed to rehabilitating and restoring mined out areas into land that is ecologically sound and, where practical, economically productive for local communities. To help meet these goals, B2Gold, through Masbate operator Filminera, launched a trial agroforestry initiative in 2021. As a pilot project, the team rehabilitated the mine’s Syndicate Waste Rock Dump, planting a range of trial crops, including pineapple, mango, dragon fruit, chestnuts and coffee. Despite obstacles presented by the pandemic, typhoons, fires and pests, the plantations have thrived. Recent studies reveal that up to 30% of timber entering Australian ports may be illegally sourced, prompting a nationwide effort to enhance timber traceability and enforcement. 🔎 What You Need to Know: 1️⃣ Addressing a Major Issue: The Australian government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has concluded a timber testing trial to investigate the origins of timber products. The results indicated that approximately 25% of the tested products had inconsistencies with declared species or origins, highlighting the urgent need for better compliance mechanisms. 2️⃣ Strengthening Legislation: Australia is revising its Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulation in response to global pressures, including the EU's new deforestation laws. The proposed Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Bill 2024 aims to boost enforcement powers and improve the detection of illegal timber trade at ports, protecting the environment and the economy. 3️⃣ Investment in Technology: To enhance traceability, Australia is investing $4.4 million in DNA testing, which will contribute to the establishment of the World Forest Identification Database.
