Streaming TV has grown up. Neilson recently introduced the Media Distributor Gauge, which tracks viewing trends by media company, aggregating the previously broadcast, cable, and streaming TV viewing reports into one. Neilson first introduced The Gauge back in 2021 to provide a glimpse into the total time U.S. viewers spend watching TV each month across distinct platforms. This helped put a perspective on the market share that streaming TV was taking from traditional TV distribution channels. But streaming has evolved. Streaming TV platforms have become their own media companies and inversely, media companies have become streaming TV platforms. Now that media giants have started to acquire streaming TV platforms, this report will allow a better direct comparison between major media players on linear TV and streaming TV platforms. For the first time, Google and Disney go head to head as content competitors. Though Google can still tout YouTube as the most-watched streaming platform, this new report helps gauge how much watch time the user-generated content platform amasses against the behemoth that is Disney.
