#EVs are not a burden to the electricity grid. They are an asset. “Like soldiers in an electron battlefield, EVs are great for storing renewable electricity and sending it back to the grid during peak demand,” as said in Bloomberg. This concept, also known as #V2G, allows using EVs as vessels to charge electricity from grids onto car batteries when clean electricity is most available and discharge electricity to surrounding homes and businesses at peak times when renewable generation is low. I wonder... .. is this how the day-to-day of EV owners will look like? .. how long until these new technologies become available en masse? .. are our grids ready? And what about the customers? Were you one the lucky 140,000 people who managed to get #Glastonbury tickets this year?    I sadly wasn't... but I have just returned from the largest tech conference in Europe #websummit which has been named 'Glastonbury for geeks'. Here are my views on how the events compare and if it really does live up to its name:   📱 App driven experience: Glastonbury-goers will know the frustration when your favourite artists are all on at the same time. This was a similar experience with an app showcasing 1000+ speakers across the 20+ stages to build your personal schedule from and of course brilliant #AI talks all happening at once. One we did all prioritise however was listening to Raman Bhatia (CEO of Starling Bank). Some key AI use cases he highlighted included an in app assistant with personal advice around money management and a high focus on fraud detection. I loved that Starling Bank are strictly customer experience first in everything they do and cautioned that if you don’t have the basics in place (data!) you will not be able to harness the power of AI. The app also showed if my contacts were attending - it was great to connect with Daniella Ball over a cocktail at the Visa stand!   🤖 Discovering the new: Some of the best times at Glastonbury are exploring new artists at the BBC introducing stage, and for me the best part of Web Summit was walking around the 3000+ stands of start ups across industries to explore the latest #innovation and speak to the founders. Some of my favourites were in the health tech space including the at home smart glove to detect abnormalities in breast tissue from Glooma.   🚀 Anything is possible: Similarly to Glastonbury there was a feeling of hope and excitement about the future. A talk on the topic of space spoke about how privatisation + increased government investment has exponentially dropped the lift cost of spaceflight and spurned a wave of innovation. The viability of ’45 minute delivery’ to anywhere in the world is something people are taking seriously when looking out over a ten year timeframe - exciting!   This photo was taken 5 years ago on my first visit to #websummit. The conference is definitely a little larger but the biggest change for me was the shift in conversation around technology. In 2019 everyone was excited about 5G & VR - this year 90% of the talks were on AI. In his keynote Brad Smith highlighted the significance of ‘General Purpose Technology’, putting AI at the same level of significance as electricity and how it should impact and improve everyone's lives. He reminded us all of the fact that still today 685 million people in the world live without electricity and raised the importance of the ability to take technology and diffuse it across the world so it truly is accessible for all.    Grateful for the learnings, new connections and the opportunity to spend time in a different environment with my colleagues - until next time #websummit! Carrie Hegan Ed Sealy Steph Poole Dan Pitcher
