Our second annual Triple Net Zero Industry Progress Report shows that when it comes to addressing climate change, companies are on the right track, but the public demands more action. In the survey, which interviewed 300 major corporations across 12 industries and 60 countries, it showed 98% of companies consider sustainability important, but only 30% see climate change as a "high risk" to their operations. In contrast, 89% of the public believes climate disruption is happening, and two-thirds of the world's inhabitants feel “exposed and vulnerable to a risk linked to climate change or pollution,” according to Veolia’s Barometer of Ecological Transformation 2024 survey. This disparity underscores the need for businesses to align with public sentiment and take decisive action to reduce their environmental impact. As global companies face mounting pressure from investors, regulators and the public, sustainability has become a critical aspect of business strategy. This latest report reveals the important factors that help companies overcome challenges toward climate progress, and highlights gaps and barriers to meeting corporate climate targets. Climate Action Partners released their fifth annual report noting the climate commitments of the world's largest companies. They noted that "despite a steady rise in climate commitments following the Paris Agreement in 2015, in the last year the number of Fortune Global 500 companies with a significant climate commitment has stagnated at around 66% of companies.  While commitments are stagnant, emissions are still on the rise. But reducing emissions pays off both environmentally and financially: companies that reduced reported emissions year over year earned on average nearly $1 billion more in profit per company than their Fortune Global 500 peers." They also note that "nearly half of Fortune Global 500 companies have a Chief Sustainability Officer or equivalent and those companies achieved modest emission reductions as a group over the last reporting year, compared to companies without a CSO that increased emissions in the same period. This still relatively new role is expected to increasingly deliver greater impact." When you think about tackling climate change, what’s one of the first things that comes to mind? Cutting your carbon footprint, right? The concept has become so deeply ingrained in our consciousness that we meticulously sort our recycling, track our travel emissions, and debate over plant-based diets—all in the name of reducing our individual impact on the planet. But here’s a surprising fact: the idea of the carbon footprint didn’t emerge from grassroots environmental activists or concerned scientists. It was created by British Petroleum (BP) in the early 2000s. Yes, you read that right. The oil giant wanted to shift the focus of environmental responsibility from corporations onto individuals. Their campaign introduced the “carbon footprint calculator,” encouraging people to measure their personal impact. Meanwhile, fossil fuel companies continued to pump billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It was a brilliant, if not slightly cynical, move. By making climate change about you—how you live, what you drive, what you eat—it diverted attention from the systemic, large-scale changes needed to hold corporations accountable. The result? Individuals feel overwhelmed by the weight of their perceived impact, while the real culprits operate largely unchallenged. This isn’t to say personal action is meaningless. Every step towards sustainability helps. But we mustn’t forget the bigger picture: 70% of global emissions come from just 100 companies. Personal choices matter, but policy change and corporate accountability matter more. So, what can we do? ✅ Support businesses committed to transparency and sustainability. ✅ Vote for leaders and policies prioritizing climate action. ✅ Advocate for systemic solutions, like renewable energy investments and stricter emission regulations. Let’s move beyond just offsetting our carbon footprints and focus on reshaping the system that creates them in the first place. The planet doesn’t need perfect individuals; it needs powerful collective action.

I came across this insightful post by Olivier Blum EVP of Energy Management Schneider Electric, which discusses the challenges companies face while committing to climate actions.  The latest Fortune 500 report reveals that commitment issues are hindering progress. However, the rewards of the sustainability journey are more impactful than many realize.  Companies with Chief Sustainability Officers are making strides 7 years faster in meeting climate goals, resulting in nearly $1 billion more in profits from yearly emissions reductions.
