It was a true pleasure and deep learning experience to work with Alex Dolginow, Sarah Federman, Sanna O'Connor-Morberg, my team Patrick Nease and Raag Lavingiya and our expert interviewees on this report. Thank you to Carbon Direct for leading the development of this report and being such great partners all the way through the process. Buyers so often say we want to invest in natural climate solutions as a way to drive land restoration, biodiversity improvements, and healthy spaces for people to thrive. So why does it seem like natural ecosystem restoration projects can be tricky to truly identify in carbon markets, and what can buyers, standards, developers, financiers, foundations, and scientists do to boost their chances of real climate and environmental impact and access to critical carbon market financing? Those are some of the questions that started the conversation that led to this report’s development. We hope it’s as useful to you to read as it was for us to put it together. Now let’s all get to our respective homework assignments and bring more natural ecosystem restoration to reality!
It’s finally out! “Opportunities for Ecological Restoration in the Voluntary Carbon Market” (https://lnkd.in/gj5_eVrg) originated out of a question: why is it so hard to find carbon projects that center ecological restoration? In working with Meta and others, we found that there were tons of projects that subsidize monoculture plantations in the tropics or extending rotation lengths by a few years in temperate timberlands, but very few that work to bring back something akin to “natural” forest. So, over the course of 2023, I led an effort alongside Dr. Sarah Federman and Sanna O'Connor-Morberg to draft a report that explored why this was and how we could nudge the market toward more restoration. We interviewed some of the smartest folks in the field while also conducting our own research and analysis. As we’ve been noodling we’ve seen others ask similar questions (Lofqvist, Garrett, & Ghazoul 2023) and propose interesting solutions (Ecosystem Restoration Standard). The report was a collaboration from a passionate team, with special shout-outs to Tracy Johns, Logan Sander, and Sanna O'Connor-Morberg alongside many others. Very curious to see whether it can lead to any collective “ahas” and galvanize creative solutions.

#SCWEC24 | What will the cities of tomorrow look like? What innovative urban environmental solutions will emerge? Many initiatives focusing on #water, #energy and waste management already exist, thanks to Veolia's know-how and innovation. 🏙️ Exchanges were very fruitful, both at the official conferences and round tables, and at our booth, where we had the pleasure of welcoming Mrs LaToya Cantrell, Mayor of New Orleans, as well as numerous international delegations. Some of the main topics addressed at the Smart City Expo World Congress included: ➡️ Intelligent systems for optimizing urban water management; ➡️ Technologies and services for reducing water footprints; ➡️ Governance and implementation of projects supported by public funding programs; ➡️ End-to-end services for the treatment of #PFAS; ➡️ Technologies needed to promote the energy transition and ecosystem protection in urban environments. I recently listened to a podcast episode titled “The Untold Story of the Voluntary Carbon Market” by Bionic Planet, highlighting the distinction between compliance markets (the “stick” approach) used to enforce the law and voluntary markets (the “carrot” approach) designed to encourage actions beyond legal requirements and test new methodologies not yet ready for compliance markets. I’m trying to figure out the “edge” — what is factual and widely accepted. Will adopting rules that govern the voluntary carbon market to require promoting more restoration stifle innovation, creativity, or progress? Currently, it seems like managers are considering restoration if the management unit lends itself to it; project developers would be wise to try to consider if it fits based on the objectives, needs, and desires of the title holder. As a newcomer to this field, I intend to read the rest of the report to deepen my understanding. Regardless, I am grateful that society is beginning to value this priceless commodity that has so much value to society. #forestry #climate #naturalcapital #carbon
