Dubai Municipality has launched a sustainable waste management project in Hatta to divert waste from landfills. The project, titled 'Outsourcing Waste Collection, Transportation, and Recycling Services', has transformed the Hatta landfill into an advanced facility spanning more than 60,000 square metres. The facility comprises an administrative office and a waste disposal zone. On average, around 20 tonnes of municipal solid waste and 27 tonnes of agricultural waste are generated daily in Hatta. This project is expected to benefit a total of 1,147 homes. The municipality has distributed over 2,500 new waste storage and collection containers, each differentiated by its colour, featuring illustrations and instructions to help with waste segregation. Abu Dhabi's #wastewater authority is searching for opportunities to scale up its Central Asian operations. GWI's editor Thomas Scotney investigates. The Abu Dhabi Sustainable Water Solutions Company (SWS Holding) is aiming to become the first #utility in the region to achieve 100% wastewater reuse levels, after smashing through a key target in 2023. SWS Holding's secured the #WaterReuse Project of the Year award last month for achieving its target of recycling 80% of the wastewater treated by the plants it runs. Achieved in 2023, the target saw significant volumes of water used in agriculture and landscaping now sourced from treated wastewater. This reduced demand for energy-hungry desalinated water supplies and strain on groundwater resources. SWS chief executive Ahmed Al Shamsi told GWI that the transformation is a major driver of the utility’s push to achieve profitability since it was established last year. Water scarcity is one of the most prominent crises that stand in the way of achieving sustainable development. Goal 6 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 ensures clean water and sanitation for all. Water scarcity affects over 40% of the world’s population. A new UN report has stated that 2.2 billion people worldwide still lacked safely managed drinking water services, and 3.5 billion lacked safely managed sanitation services. Following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE continues to cooperate with its partners to address the challenge of water scarcity for development and peace. This enhances the UAE’s leadership in developing and adopting advanced technologies to support sustainable industrial development. The UAE launches local and international projects, programmes, and incentives to accelerate the adoption of green technologies, achieve climate neutrality, and support investment in research and innovation, to create a positive impact that ensures the sustainability of resources and a brighter future for current and future generations.
