Will automated border crossings be here soon 🛫❓ Long queues at airport checkpoints, annoyed passengers, and stressed officials – the soaring number of travelers worldwide has been calling for solutions to make border crossings more efficient. The increasing use of automation can be a way to solve these problems. Automation technologies can streamline processes along the entire passenger journey – from the collection of personal data via Digital Travel Authorizations (DTAs) before the journey to biometric verification, e.g. in eKiosks and eGates. Governments and authorities are also feeling the pressure to provide their passengers with a seamless travel experience, which is why they are also increasingly pushing the use of automation technologies. 👩 While these technological advancements are a cause for optimism, we must keep in mind that the road to a seamless traveler experience must also meet the highest security demands. The short answer to the entry question is therefore: Frictionless border crossing is something we can expect in the future, but we’re not quite there yet. To learn where we are standing and where we are headed in automated border crossing, read our new article: https://lnkd.in/d3d4MJYN #BorderCrossing #SeamlessTravel #Biometrics #Technology

"The decentralized nature of the Digital Travel Ecosystem ensures that travelers’ digital identities and personal information remain fully under their control. At its core is a privacy-by-design approach, developed in partnership with Indicio, which enables the secure global sharing of passengers' digital credentials. This approach ensures that travelers are sharing their information only with explicit consent. It is only then that this data can be securely shared across various sectors, giving these stakeholders the assurance that the travelers’ digital identity has been verified and issued in real-time." Great to be working on this world changing technology that puts people first! #DTC #VerifiableCredentials #DecentralizedIdentity #DigitalIdentity #PortableTrust

Facial recognition technology is increasingly being used at airports for identification verification. This technology, already implemented at numerous international airports, enhances security and streamlines processes like immigration and customs. In the U.S., the TSA uses it at over 30 airports, with plans to extend it to 400 more. Airlines like Delta, American, and United are incorporating facial recognition for various traveler services, including PreCheck screening and lounge access. What are the concerns about implementing this technology? #Aero #Technology #Innovation https://lnkd.in/embKgt6t

If you've ever been half way through filling out the same information, usually your name and address, over and over and over on a seemingly never-ending pile of documents, or if you've stood in line shuffling a pile of papers, tickets, and ID cards waiting for someone to come 'check' them, or just screamed at your phone after another website asks for you to pick a password then for you to click on pictures of fire hydrants...then the SITA's Digital Travel is for you. SITA is doing what all companies should be doing: looking at how technology can actually HELP the user experience AND the businesses and other agencies that depend on verifiable data. The DTC is how the internet should (and thanks to SITA, is starting to) work:

In 1930, there were only around 6 000 passengers traveling by air. By 1934, this had risen to just under 500,000*. Fast-forward to 2019 and it had exploded to 4 billion travelers. In fact the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects 8 billion air travelers annually by 2040. The demand for air-travel is booming. The surge in air traveler numbers places extraordinary pressure on existing and new airports, national borders, and airline resources. In short, “existing paper-based and manual travel infrastructure and legacy processes simply won’t be able to cope”. The biometric boarding harness the power of face to create a smoother, safer, and slicker boarding experience. By applying advanced technology CBP BIOMETRICS EXIT PROGRAM solve industry challenges, like specialist staff shortages, and evolving passenger wants and needs. Continuing our journey to adapt this Air New Zealand rolls our biometric boarding at Honolulu. #biometric #seamlesstravelexperience #digital

Perhaps, once again #smartphones and air #travel will be the key to #digitalidentity #technology adoption. We have a chicken and egg conundrum with Verifiable Credentials (VCs). There is widespread consensus that a #decentralized #identitity model based on VCs makes a ton of sense - with the caveat that THERE MUST BE some level of initial #centralized #identity vetting (including multiple sources e.g. #NationalID, #Passport, #DMV, University, etc. issuer(s)) and binding to make the system reliable. And of course, this MUST rely on the highest level of #secure, #private #biometric and #PII data capture, storage, and management. As with #biometrics, If VCs can be widely adopted for #airtravel by enhancing the #passsenger experience - and clearly based on this pilot, there is lots of work to do - I believe this could be the critical path application to break the floodgates and solve the conundrum. As many of you may have heard, there is a dangerous amendment in Congress that would be catastrophic for the travel industry—and business travelers would be some of the hardest hit. The impacts of this amendment could not be more severe for business travelers and America's travel industry. The amendment would do three things: #1: Force Americans to wait an additional 120 million hours in TSA lines each year by significantly slowing down both PreCheck and standard screening lanes. #2: Threaten national security by effectively banning TSA’s use of facial recognition technology on non-PreCheck passengers. #3: Slash efficiency for TSA PreCheck screening by requiring cumbersome processes, such as requiring all passengers to be offered a manual ID check first. Use your voice to #ProtectPrecheck and ensure we continue to make strides to improve the travel experience—for business and leisure travelers alike. Take action: https://lnkd.in/eBzRazeM
