What’s the Main Difference Between a Clinical Statistician and a Data Scientist? Both clinical #statisticians and #data_scientists use data analytics techniques to optimize trial design and generate actionable insights for decision-making. However, their approaches and roles differ in important ways. A clinical statistician typically focuses on statistical methods for analyzing and interpreting data, ensuring rigor and compliance with regulatory standards. In contrast, a data scientist brings a broader toolkit that includes machine learning and advanced computational methods, often exploring data from a more exploratory and predictive angle. Let me illustrate this with a recent example at #ClinBAY: Our team was tasked with designing an efficacy study in ophthalmology. The main challenge was the variability in the #placebo response. In some historical studies, vision improved under sham treatment, while in others, it worsened. The data scientist applied machine-learning techniques to predict the placebo response by incorporating all available personal, environmental, and procedural factors. This led to the creation of a #digital_twin model, where placebo variability was explained by a set of covariates. The statistician then integrated these covariates into the study design, randomisation and sample size calculations, which significantly improved the signal-to-noise ratio and increased the statistical power of the study. By working together, statisticians and data scientists are transforming the way clinical research is conducted. Their combined expertise leads to a deeper understanding of patients, ultimately increasing the chances of success for innovative therapies.
