During my tenure as a field engineer for a bridge contractor, I've observed that the issues arising from how rebar is drawn and detailed in 2D, and quantified in bridge plans, are often underestimated by Engineers of Record (EORs). This is largely because about 90% of these rebar conflicts are resolved on-site by the rodbusters or through a consensus between the field engineer and the Construction Engineering Inspector (CEI). Only the problems that incur significant material costs or cause schedule delays are escalated back to the EOR.  I think this is one of the main reasons why I absolutely love modeling rebar in 3D. One of my favorite things to do is let someone draw and detail bridge pier reinforcement in the traditional 2D workflow while I model and detail it in 3D taking half the time. In many countries, especially in Europe, the responsibility for reinforcement drawings in reinforced concrete structures often falls... ...on the project engineer, rather than a specialized rebar detailer as it is in the USA, Canada, or Australia. Examples of such countries include Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands. When project engineers are responsible for reinforcing drawings, it can be disadvantageous from the production standpoint of steel suppliers. This approach can lead to: ➡️ Project engineers may not have the specialized expertise in detailing that rebar detailers possess, leading to potential inefficiencies. ➡️ The process may take longer as engineers juggle multiple responsibilities, causing delays in the production and delivery of steel reinforcements. ➡️ Without the focused expertise of rebar detailers, the likelihood of errors in the reinforcement drawings can increase, potentially leading to costly corrections and revisions. ➡️ Engineers may not be as familiar with the practical aspects of steel fabrication and installation, leading to miscommunications and misunderstandings with steel suppliers.
