Corporations and investors are uniquely positioned to create positive societal impact in their communities. But how can businesses and VCs ensure they make a lasting impact in communities nationwide? At a recent The Aspen Institute event hosted at High Alpha Innovation HQ in Indianapolis, a common thread across all of the speakers' discussions was how organizations can create professional development and growth opportunities for underserved communities. Skills-based training is just one way that corporations can invest in “underestimated” communities and provide returns for investors. https://lnkd.in/g-tQDe_R #VentureBuilding #CommunityInvestment

Last week, I had the chance to speak at an investor summit, organized by Andre Homulenko, sharing insights on the current PE/VC market. While preparing, I observed a significant drop in investment and exit volumes in recent years, influenced by rising interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical tensions. Interestingly, however, the capital raised by funds hasn’t decreased much. This points to a surplus of available capital compared to high-quality investment opportunities. A notable example is CRV’s recent decision to return $275 million to its LPs from its $500 million Select fund, referring the overvaluation of mature startups and challenging market conditions. This situation highlights the current imbalance in the market, where capital is chasing fewer viable investments. It’ll be interesting to see how the industry adapts to these challenges over the coming months and years. My view is that deal volume will gradually increase as interest rates moderate and unallocated capital is slowly deployed. But with so many wild cards in play, it’s hard to say what’s next… If there’s one skill that’s defined human progress, it’s adaptability, and in today’s world, it’s more valuable than ever.

One of the workshops I attended recently was a very valuable one on Angel Investing. Besides learning more about the technicalities of this type of investment, I got out with some insights that I encourage each early stage investor to think of : - Have a clear motivation why you want to be an angel investor - Assess your risk appetite - Gain clarity on your investment sectors - Understand the market needs: a nice to have product vs. a must have product - Decide if you are going to make yourself available for the founders when they are in desperate need of advice - Allocate time to build relationships, both with founders and other angels I know a few Angels' success stories that are very inspiring and aspirational. My understanding is that it takes volume to create a meaningful portfolio, it takes time to source deals and exit and a lot of patience when things don’t go the way they were presented to, which is quite often. I also find it very useful to be part of Angels communities like TechAngels Romania or Bravva Angels as communities contribute to more value creation. Congratulations to all who contributed to this valuable event!
