I'm happy to share our latest article in the BMJ Global Health titled "Shaping a new era of global health for greater impact: CUGH 2024 highlights." We highlight a few themes poised to shape the future of global health practice. Global health continues to grapple with significant inequities, raising concerns around the roles of technology and AI, the value of Indigenous knowledge systems, and the distribution of global health financing. Our paper synthesizes key themes from the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) 2024 conference, offering insights into the beneficial and detrimental impacts of AI, the integration of Indigenous knowledge into culturally competent healthcare delivery, and the urgent need to decolonize global health financing. The World Health Summit recently took place in Berlin under the title ‘Building Trust for a Healthier World’. 💡 Programme manager Karolin Pfeiffer from SolidarMed attended the summit. Topics such as mother-child health, the effects of climate change, disaster and pandemic preparedness and the promotion of youth leadership were discussed: key topics, on which SolidarMed is also working. 📌 Germany's Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (in the picture) confirmed that SolidarMed is on the right track with its scientific monitoring of the programmes when he said: ‘Science is the vaccine for pandemic preparedness and global health’. 💉 Liam Smeeth, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, noted that modern technology such as artificial intelligence can also be helpful for this: ‘We need to measure and quantify the added value of technology and AI’. He however also added: “AI will not replace comprehensive clinical care”. 🧑⚕️ The summit made it very clear that action and collaboration is needed at all levels to address and mitigate the current and future health challenges. 👍 #trust #worldhealthsummit #health #care #AI #collaboration

Positive moves towards achieving universal health coverage will be one of the most significant contributions digital health applications will make to the future of healthcare delivery and management in South Africa during the next decade. Key to this will be the role it will play in breaking “the proverbial Iron Triangle”, i.e. perennial issues surrounding the interoperability between access, quality and cost.
