Can you let go of your ego? Let's face it, there's a lot of ego involved in software development. It takes an ego to look at a problem and say "I can write code that will solve that." Runaway ego can also shut down creative thinking and cooperation. So the ability to set your ego aside and let someone else win/drive/lead/decide is very important in growing a company. In my personal life I lead a Cub Scout Pack. That's a group of little kids from Kindergarten to 5th grade who like to do outdoorsy things, like camping and hiking. My Cub Scouts raise money each year to help pay for our program and one year I told the kids that anyone who raised more than $300 for our Pack could hit me in the face with a whipped cream pie. They were inspired and more than 24 of the kids achieved that goal. That then became a tradition in our group. Over the next 5 years I was hit in the face with more thasn 200 pies. One young boy even broke my nose when he punched the pie into my face. It's hard to have a lot of ego when you're snuffling bloody whipped cream through a broken nose and trying to keep a smile on your face. This doesn't really have that much to do with work. I just figured I'd let folks see that I can take a pie in the face for a good cause. https://lnkd.in/gQ-grccE

This weekend, we’re going to race across more than 200 miles through 15 towns on Cape Cod with up to 20-pounds on our backs… Sure, it SUCKS, but do you know what SUCKS even more? It SUCKS to lose someone you love because there were no programs or services available for veterans, who suffered silently after active duty. According to recent surveys, almost 44 veterans kill themselves each day – and that’s 44 veterans a day way too many. The unintended consequences cut deep, reach far and last forever. No one should ever have to experience it, but, unfortunately, many do. How can we help? We can support AMAZING organizations, like HEROES IN TRANSITION INC , that offer unique programs and services to build stronger relationships and better communities for veterans, active service members and their families. ***So, you may be thinking… If it SUCKS, then why do we do it? Take the time needed to lament, rest, feel all the feels… And then there’s work to do. Find local non profits you can partner with who are in proximity to to our neighbors impacted by systemic challenges and barriers and love them well (this means be culturally compassionate/humble too). All this to say, who wants to partner with me and The Firehouse Dream as we dream up even more ways to be a safe space and place for BIPOC youth in Chicagoland area? We are using creativity as a healing tool, as we invest in youth mental health and financial wellness (this includes focusing on racial healing.) We can’t do this work without our entire ecosystem, and most of all we need the funding to do this work! This week is the 8 year anniversary of one the most extraordinary races I’ve ever been a part of… running a 200 mile relay with 11 other guys in the Washington DC Ragnar event to raise funds and support for Operation Giveback. Operation Giveback is a powerful outreach to support our wounded veterans and families of fallen heroes! The photo is our team about 200 yards from the finish line (after 2 days/36 segments) joined by many others as part of the OGB Team! Our team traded off running over two days, overnight and in some very treacherous weather conditions. We believed in, supported and encouraged one another! We persevered though very challenging elevations in the mountains of Virginia and running through driving rainstorms! Some on our team were running in spite of traumatic injuries suffered while serving our country! Their courage was and still is an inspiration! The camaraderie and team support I experienced was “off-the-charts!” I am also reminded of a quote learned from Zig Ziglar many years ago: “A lot of people have gone further than they thought they could because someone else thought they could!” Never underestimate what your team can accomplish when everyone believes in and genuinely supports each other!
