It can be difficult to balance the art of practicing veterinary medicine with operations that result in a profitable practice. In his latest Today's Veterinary Business column, Andy Roark, DVM, MS, asserts that veterinarians have the power to marry medicine and operations and create an industry that serves pets and clients in new and exciting ways. https://loom.ly/wGNcbjA

🦸♀️ What Power Do Veterinarians Really Have? It’s impossible to ignore the changes happening in veterinary medicine. Never before has there been so much interest and investment in our profession from outside sources. Corporate consolidation, private-equity investment and the growth of online retail are having a visible impact on the veterinary industry. It’s not hard to understand why veterinarians might feel a bit powerless, frustrated, and even afraid. For some, the changes in veterinary medicine can feel like we are on the cusp of having our trade taken away in exchange for a spot in some quasi-medical assembly line. Is that where we are going? https://lnkd.in/gRTCgrQ9 #veterinaryjobs #vetjobs #veterinarian #dvm #veterinarysurgeon #veterinarynurse #vetnurse #veterinarytechnician #vettech #vetlife Veterinary Jobs - Vet Jobs - Veterinarian Jobs - DVM Jobs - Veterinary Surgeon Jobs - Veterinary Nurse Jobs - Vet Nurse Jobs - Veterinary Technician Jobs - Vet Tech Jobs - Veterinary Medicine Jobs - Veterinary Surgery Jobs - Vet Life

Colorado Voters Approve Proposition 129: A New Path for Veterinary Care Colorado voters have opened the door to a transformative shift in veterinary care by approving Proposition 129, establishing the role of Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs). This newly regulated position aims to address a critical shortage of veterinary services, particularly in rural areas. The VPA position provides a middle ground between veterinary technicians & licensed veterinarians, enabling trained professionals to perform a broader scope of procedures, including routine surgeries like spaying and neutering. This role, supervised by licensed veterinarians, offers a promising solution to increase access to care while addressing cost barriers. As this concept develops, it could have a profound impact on the veterinary industry: - Expanding Access to Care: With rural areas struggling to meet demand, VPAs could become a lifeline for underserved communities, offering timely and affordable care for animals. - Relieving Veterinarian Workloads: By delegating routine procedures, licensed veterinarians can focus on complex cases, improving efficiency & reducing burnout in a field known for its demanding nature. - Lowering Costs for Pet Owners: The new position’s reduced educational requirements, compared to veterinarians, could translate into lower tuition costs for candidates & ultimately more affordable services for pet owners. However, challenges remain. Critics raise concerns about ensuring VPAs meet rigorous training standards to maintain high-quality care. The veterinary community now faces the task of setting clear guidelines, building robust training programs & fostering collaboration to integrate VPAs successfully into care teams. Colorado State University’s veterinary school is already developing a master’s program for VPAs, with the first graduates expected in three years. Early adopters among veterinarians could help demonstrate the value and safety of this new role, paving the way for broader acceptance. Colorado’s approval of Proposition 129 could serve as a model for other states. If successful, this innovation could reshape veterinary care nationwide, making it more accessible, efficient, and sustainable. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) did not support Proposition 129. In fact, the CVMA opposed the measure, aligning with other veterinary organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the opposition campaign Keep Our Pets Safe. Despite these concerns, voters passed the proposition, with proponents highlighting its potential to improve access to veterinary care, particularly in underserved rural areas. What are your thoughts? Could this approach address the challenges we face in veterinary care? #veterinarymedicine #veterinary #coloradoveterinary #CVMA #DVM

A new economic study from Brakke Consulting commissioned by the AVMA finds—unsurprisingly, in my view—that the data does NOT support a shortage of veterinarians. In fact, if all of the proposed new vet schools come to fruition (to say nothing of "midlevel practitioners"!) we will likely overshoot demand substantially. “In short, the projections in this analysis do not justify a conclusion of overall excess capacity or capacity shortage by 2030 or 2035,” according to Volk. Meanwhile, the population of veterinarians is likely to grow faster than pet owning households if all 13 proposed veterinary schools become accredited. With 33 U.S. veterinary colleges currently recognized by the AVMA Council on Education (AVMA COE), this would represent a nearly 40% increase in a 10-year period." https://lnkd.in/eZF9kXQV

Great news as we look ahead to 2025! As the number of accredited veterinary schools grows, the gap between the number of pets and veterinarians is shrinking. After years of braving increased demand in the midst of veterinarian shortages, this is sure to be a welcome change for veterinary teams and pet parents alike. https://lnkd.in/ghq5SF-c #animalhealth #vetshortage #2025trends

For those who do have access to this critical service, telemedicine has become a crucial lifeline to both veterinarians and pet parents in rural areas where veterinary care is too often limited. In veterinary deserts where clinics are hours away, and the number of practicing veterinarians continues to shrink, pet owners are left with few options for routine and emergency care. Telemedicine allows veterinarians to leverage digital tools like video calls, health reports, and delivery medicine services and provide virtual consultations, enabling pet owners to seek professional advice without the need for long-distance travel. #telehealth #telemedicine #ruralhealth #veterinarycare

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀! The story has often been told that young veterinarians no longer want to work hard and to become clinic owners. It’s a convenient story for those seeking to buy all (or nearly all) of the profit of clinics – which makes it impossible for the next generation to become owners of their own clinics. Smartemis believes that 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 existing veterinarians honor their “chef d’entreprise” status and the independence that offers. We also believe that many members of the next generation of veterinarians 𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗢 want ownership and independence – and are willing to put in the hard work necessary to achieve that result. How to find out for sure? 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀! Smartemis sponsored a study by ProVeto Junior Council Lyon (France), an association of student veterinarians, to do just that. ProVeto surveyed 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 “𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗭” 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀, both those recently graduated and those still in school. The findings were reported in a cover article in the French journal La Dépêche Vétérinaire last week – just in time for the annual Association Française des Vétérinaires pour Animaux de Compagnie (AFVAC) conference. What do these veterinarians have to say for themselves? 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝟮𝟯.𝟱%) 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰. And another one-quarter of them (27.9%) are interested in becoming owners once they have gained the necessary experience and have stabilized their financial situation as independent adults.
