Be Bold. Stand Out. In the professional world fitting in is often seen as the path to success, it can be challenging to take a step that makes you stand out. Yet, it's the bold and the different, and sometimes even the "crazy" ideas that lead the way to innovation and change…..and new opportunities. This weekend, I experienced this firsthand in Granada. Expecting everyone to be dressed up for the traditional festivities, I put on my flamenco outfit only to discover I was the only one! The festivities were starting the next day! At first, I felt a bit out of place, but then fun things started to happen. Tourists started asking me for directions, and I found myself in numerous engaging conversations with people on the street. My bold choice to dress up, despite not being sure if everyone else would be dressed up that day, made me attract a lot attention, creating unique opportunities for connection and interaction with strangers. Same goes here on LinkedIn, if we do not dare to stand out and show our uniqueness, nobody will notice us. Do you feel uncomfortable being visible online? How will people then understand what is unique about you, how are you different from all the other 1000s of applicants and scientists looking to transition? 🔹 Dare to be different: Don’t shy away from expressing your unique perspectives and ideas, even if they seem unconventional. History is filled with stories of those called crazy, who were initially misunderstood but later celebrated for their ground breaking contributions. 🔹 Accept your weirdness: What makes you weird or different is what makes you valuable. Your unique experiences and insights can provide fresh solutions and perspectives that others might overlook. 🔹 Take risks: Standing out means taking risks and sometimes facing criticism or skepticism. This Christmas, I had an unexpected leadership challenge. No, it wasn’t about KPIs or business impact —it was about magic. Here's my lesson learned from... stepping into Italian Santa’s Boots 🎅✨ My wife and I were invited to an Italian family’s Christmas Eve dinner (thanks to wonderful parents of my dear italian friend Giuseppe Castelluzzo). Not just any dinner—a feast with 60 people under one roof, 20 of them kids. It was loud, warm, delicious, and simply magical in the most wonderful way. Here comes the twist. Before we attended I was asked “Would you be our Santa Claus for the night?". So somewhere between the fourth and fifth tasty dish, at around 10 PM, with a slightly nervous stomach (and definitely not enough Italian fluency for the task), I slipped away, put on the iconic red suit, and transformed into Babbo Natale (how you call Santa Clause in Italy where we live). Let me tell you — this was one of the most nerve-wracking gigs I’ve ever had. It wasn’t about impressing a client, delivering a keynote, or navigating a tough meeting. It was about holding the attention and belief of 20 wide-eyed children. Would they understand my broken Italian? Would I make them smile? Would I deliver the magic they were expecting? Here’s what I realized. We often aim to shine at work for measurable outcomes—a promotion, recognition, results. But sometimes, the most meaningful “deliverables” are not tied to metrics at all. That night, it wasn’t about being perfect. It was about showing up — with good intentions, a warm heart, and a willingness to step far outside my comfort zone. And in the end? The kids laughed, clapped, and their faces lit up with joy. Sometimes, the scariest roles we step into are the ones that remind us what truly matters. So a late Buon Natale, amici.
