USDA Forest Service U.S. Forest Service Trail Etiquette! If you are new to hiking or recreating in the woods you might not be familiar with some rules of etiquette that help make encountering other recreationists an enjoyable experience. For example, did you know that horses always have the right of way on a trail, and that mountain bikers should always yield to both hikers and horses. Hikers also must do some yielding when they encounter people on horseback. When this occurs, stop, and ask the lead horse rider which side of the trail they would like you to step to as the horses pass. If you approach from behind, calmly announce your presence and intentions. When the horses pass you, avoid sudden movements or loud noises. Just speak in a calm voice letting the horses know you are not a threat. Some things to keep in mind when using national forest trails: ▪ Make yourself known. When you encounter other hikers and trail users, offer a friendly “hello”. If you approach someone from behind, announce yourself in a friendly, calm tone and let them know you want to pass. ▪ If you are in a group, hike single file. ▪ If taking a break, move off the trail so others can pass by. ▪ Hikers coming uphill have the right of way, if you are descending the trail, step aside and give space to the people climbing up. ▪ Stay on the trail and be mindful of trail conditions. If a trail is too wet and muddy, turn back and save the hike for another day. ▪ Be respectful of both nature and other trail users and keep the noise from electronic devices low or off. ▪ If hiking with a pet be sure to keep it under control. Don’t forget to pack out pet waste. ▪ Do not feed or disturb wildlife. They need their space and so do you. These are some hiking etiquette guidelines that will help you have a safe, fun, and relaxing trip when you recreate on national forest trails. #horses #trails #caballos #circulacion #prioridad #veredas

The article suggests that hikers leaving the trail for any reason should leave a sign to indicate their detour, improving safety and reducing disorientation. This can be done by leaving a non-essential item from their pack, such as a hat or hiking poles, at the point where they leave the trail. This strategy not only helps hikers find their way back but also aids in search and rescue efforts if they become lost. Learned a new lesson/technique a couple days ago from our long-time friend Marjorie for hiking on Australian tracks that are narrow and in the bush--(like the first photo). Marjorie took us on such a walk and instructed us to search around the ground and find a "spider stick" at the trail head. An ideal spider stick is 3-ish feet long, not heavy, and has a few smaller branches splayed out on the far end. The issue is that there are LOTS of spiders in Australia. Some are deadly, most are not. These are not necessarily your average pinkie-size spiders. They can be the size of your fist! These never-tiring critters spin their webs down from and between the vegetation across the trail non-stop. Hard to see often times. So the trick is that as you walk along you hold the stick out straight in front of you constantly waving it up and down from near the ground to a few feet above your head. As the stick hits one of the webs, it makes it easier to see as it or the spider moves. This will alert you to their presence where you can avoid them or tear through them. There are more webs and spiders early in the morning or any time that other hikers have not come along first and cleared the way for you. We've already done a fair amount of hiking here Down Under and had not really noted this issue before. But has you can see from these photos... on this hike there were TONS of webs and spiders we were able to avoid from Marjorie's good advice.
