Women are being underdiagnosed and under-treated when it comes to heart disease. They’re even less likely to be treated promptly and appropriately for the main CVD risk factors, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, according to a Cardiology at BMJ report. Its authors say it’s time for a new approach to preventing needless deaths, including women’s heart champions and heart hubs and raising awareness that heart disease is one of the leading killers of women in Australia and not just a man's disease: https://lnkd.in/dpBz6gyc #HeartDisease #WomensHeartDisease

Today is not only 29th Feb which occurs on a Leap year, it also notably Rare Disease Awareness Day. Rare conditions are individually rare but collectively common, with over 7000 identified. One of these rare diseases is Mucopolysarcharidosis type I (MPS1)" which would be more commonly known as Hurler Syndrome which is a rare disease (it occurs in 1 in every 100,000 babies), MPS1 is a condition where your body doesn't have enough enzymes to break down sugar molecules. The condition causes skeletal/joint abnormalities, distinct facial characteristics, issues with cognitive development, heart and lung (respiratory) problems and an enlarged liver and spleen. #rarediseaseday2024 #rarediseaseawareness #rarediseaseresearch

As we recognised #WorldHeartDay, Niamh Mangan reflects on the disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD). If all stakeholders - from industry to patient organisations and healthcare professionals work together, we can address these fundamental gaps in knowledge, awareness and education and close the disparity in care between women and men in cardiovascular disease. The recent report published by the Global Heart Hub on Late, Missed and Misdiagnosed heart disease in women suggests some robust solutions to the challenge of inadequate education in this area. Let’s explore the report and join the conversation with TWSC Women’s Health to help drive change in CVD care.
