Building strong relationships with journalists and media outlets isn’t just a tactic—it’s the heart of effective PR. It’s not about bombarding inboxes with press releases; it’s about creating meaningful connections that last. Start by understanding the journalists you want to connect with. What drives them? What stories light them up? Take the time to read their work, share it, and engage genuinely. When you show that you’re not just another pitch in their inbox, but someone who values what they do, you start laying the foundation for a real relationship. Reliability is everything. Journalists often work under tight deadlines, and if you’re the one they can count on for timely, accurate information, that trust grows. Be the person who follows through, who delivers what you promise without fail. That’s how you become a go-to resource, not just a contact. And don’t forget the human side. A quick coffee chat or a friendly call can go a long way. These moments of connection turn you from just another name into someone they trust and respect. It’s in these interactions that you move from being a PR pro to a true partner in their storytelling journey. In PR, relationships are your greatest asset. Nurture them with care, and you’ll see your stories not just published but truly supported. #MediaRelations #JournalistConnections #PRTips #BuildingTrust #Storytelling #RelationshipManagement #PublicRelations #Networking #PRProfessionals #MediaOutreach

🌟 Extra extra! 🌟 I’m thrilled to share that I’m launching a new PR consulting service aimed at helping public relations firms, independent PR professionals, and businesses with in-house marketing and PR teams refine their media pitches and create better synergy with journalists. As a journalist, I’ve read countless pitch emails — many of which were trashed, despite having great potential for stories. With my insider perspective, I know what captures attention...and what falls flat. My goal is to provide you with candid feedback and insights that lead to pitches that not only resonate but also transform into compelling coverage. I believe in maintaining ethical standards in my work. To ensure transparency and trust, I will not accept pitches from the PR firms I collaborate with in this manner. If you're looking to hone your pitching strategy, schedule a discovery call with me at hi@writingsofrachel.com. Let’s help you get coverage on stories that are worth the hedline! #PRConsulting #MediaRelations #PublicRelations #Journalism

We all pitch ideas, but PR pros do it as part of their job -- sending emails to journalists and praying some of them are kind enough to give the PR pro some media coverage. Maybe the PR pros aren't praying hard enough, because less than 4% of their pitches on average even receive a response, let alone a positive response. Or maybe...the way they pitch leaves something to be desired. In my article attached below, I explore 5 major pitching mistakes PR pros make and how they can be avoided. If you have any thoughts or opinions, do share them in the comments! #CS2101 #PRWriting #Pitching

“It’s not who you know. It’s the value you bring them.” In public relations, and specifically in media strategy, this is gospel. Often, when vetting a PR agency, clients will gauge the firm’s merits by their response to the question "which reporters do you know"? The answer to that question is, in general terms, “it doesn’t matter.” What does matter is if your story pitch brings value, both to the reporter, AND to their audience, and that reporter trusts you, because you consistently bring them that aforementioned value. The reality is, if my story idea doesn’t align to the reporter’s beat, and doesn’t show them that I understand what their readers or viewers need, and doesn’t help them differentiate their media platform, then it won’t matter if my very own mother is the reporter. The story isn’t getting picked up. A PR professional and their firm should be evaluated based on their ability to continually deliver great stories that bring value, because they are informed by credible evidence and supported by expert testimony. Do that often enough, and then you might be able to say that you “know” a certain reporter will take your calls or read your emails. But only as long as you keep delivering value. #PublicRelations #MediaRelations

Harsh - but sometimes fair - opinions about press releases 😬🗞️ Press releases can be one of the most effective communication tools. They’re a quick way to disseminate information widely to a targeted audience, and a well-written press release can demonstrate professionalism and credibility for your business school. However, if not written or distributed correctly, they can come with various pitfalls. This means that many PR professionals can hold rather harsh – but in some cases fair – opinions about press releases. So, what are these harsh opinions? 💭 Many in the communications sector argue that press releases can be dry, overly corporate, and full of jargon, making them less engaging. To avoid this, it's essential to tell a compelling story that stands out. Even the most "boring" topics can be made interesting by highlighting their human impact or broader implications, as PR professionals are storytellers who bring the narrative to life. Our PR Consultant Olivia Nieberg demonstrates that even though there are some harsh opinions about press releases – they can be counteracted with effective PR and communication skills. 💬 Want to find out more?
