This should be taught in schools: Just physical rest isn't enough to avoid stress and burnout. If you sleep for 7+ hours, that's only 1/7 of your energy restored. According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, there are 7 types of rest we NEED 👇 1) Physical Rest: Quality sleep and activities like yoga or massage. 2) Mental Rest: Taking breaks to calm a busy mind. 3) Sensory Rest: Minimizing sensory overload. 4) Social Rest: Nurturing positive relationships. 5) Spiritual Rest: Discovering purpose and belonging. 6) Emotional Rest: Being genuine and open about emotions. 7) Creative Rest: Finding inspiration and fostering creativity. So next time, when planning your weekend, don't aim to sleep the whole day. Try to schedule time for each type of rest. And you will see how energetic and refreshed you will be afterward.

I have found that burnout catch staff completely off guard as most people think it will not happen to them. It is important to maintain a work life balance to avoid burnout even when the deadlines are tough. Burnout colleages became sluggish, temperamental and unproductive. Also when in the state of Burnout, one day off did not make any difference on their performance, temperament or emotional well being.

The framework of the required health general education course I teach at Emory University is the 5 Pillars of Health - physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual. Each pillar is addressed with evidence based information and practical application strategies. The goal is to educate and empower undergraduate students to develop and engage in positive health practices to help them with the transition to college as well as after graduation. A good bit of conversation in class is around time and energy management, stress management, social connections and postive mental health. Rejuvenation and rest are a big part of performing at the highest level without burnout. It’s great to be able to see students getting a bigger picture of health beyond the physical aspect.

This is great and I can see how it will be beneficial to adopt the principle, though the thought of fitting all of that into my weekend sent me into a mini spin and pre-exhausted me. Which is the opposite of what is meant to do. I like the idea of spreading it out throughout the week. Being a hairdresser, I'm totally dictated by the clock so I like to not be dictated by the clock over my weekends, ie scheduling in my different rests. I also experience not just the physical demands but also intense amounts of emotional energy transfer from each person I have in my chair, 'resetting' between clients is almost essential. I also appreciate this is going to be a bit of a mind shift. Thank you for sharing.

This absolutely hit home for me Victoria Repa. It's so easy to think a good night's sleep is the cure-all for burnout, but it doesn't address the mental overload or the need for real connection. This idea of targeting different kinds of rest feels like a game-changer. A great reminder that taking care of ourselves is about more than just hitting the pause button.

Burnout is an organisational problem. We can't manage it by taking more yoga or pilates classes. That's especially "burning" in the healthcare sector across the globe. This concept is very useful and would create even more value if taken to the organisational level!

I’m not convinced by the term “rest” in the above: it’s used I think to mean “doing something different from your day job”, rather than about resting. To wit: I’ve read before how busman’s holidays can also regenrate people; creativity is work, just work for yourself, rather than for somebody else. Your life is work, it’s more about how you apply it.
