There’s a new kind of identity theft on the rise. One that’s harder to detect and even harder to stop. Synthetic identity fraud grew by 31% in the past year, costing businesses and individuals over $20 billion in 2023 (Source: Experian). Cybercriminals combine real information, such as Social Security Numbers (often from children or inactive accounts), with fake names, addresses, or other data to create entirely new, false personas that can bypass traditional verification systems. Want to stay ahead of potential danger? Here are the three most important steps to protect yourself from synthetic identity fraud: -> Monitor your credit reports regularly: Check for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. -> Freeze your children’s credit: Children are prime targets for synthetic fraud because their credit files are often untouched. -> Be cautious with your data: Social Security Numbers and other PII should be shared only when necessary. You never know when synthetic fraud could show up at your digital doorstep. Taking these proactive steps today can help protect your future. What’s your go-to tip for protecting against identity fraud? #syntheticidentity #fraud
