Enjoyed our conversation on EU-Taiwan cooperation with Julien Oeuillet 曾樂昂 for Radio Taiwan International. The point of departure to our conversation was a point I made in our Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP) study, “Why Taiwan Matters to Europe”. I argued: “In order to continue the positive trend in their relations, the EU and Taiwan will need to move from celebrating each other’s like-mindedness to establishing strategic consultations on issues that matter to both: democracy and trade”. What this means: at present, stating that EU-Taiwan relations are rooted in a shared belief in values is stating the obvious. The foundation of cooperation is solid enough to further build on. Much has already been done. But how can relations be further expanded within existing boundaries? I see more cooperation possible if both sides approach it with more creativity. This means making better use of the space for cooperation that the EU and Taiwan have already secured. Going forward, tools such as parliamentary diplomacy will therefore remain valuable (but not enough). For example, the European Parliament’s first ever official delegation to Taiwan in 2021 allowed the two sides to learn from each other as partners when it comes to efforts to counter foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI). This was unprecedented - and creative (although otherwise ‘normal’ between democracies). Both sides can be even more creative going forward. This will allow bringing more #Europe to #Taiwan, and more Taiwan to Europe, despite boundaries. https://lnkd.in/g9bdQmpe

🎬 Following the EU elections, we're releasing a series of videos on what the results mean for international cooperation. With the greater right wing pushing for an inward looking agenda, there are likely to be huge changes in the EU's approach to foreign policy, global partnerships and international development. But what are we expecting to see in practice? And what are the consequences of these changes likely to be? In the first video, Amandine Sabourin, Ph.D. explains how the growing disinterest in international cooperation is damaging partnerships already frayed by the EU's recent, more assertive approach. This work follows from our series 'To the New Leaders of Europe,' where we explored how the EU’s relationship with countries worldwide is changing and emphasised the importance of investing in strategic global partnerships. My pleasure to join TaiwanPlus to speak about the potential outcomes of the #USElections2024 on #Asia and #Taiwan 🇹🇼 . "If Trump wins, we may looking at a very different world, in terms of geopolitics, in four years time." Regardless of who wins, however, #Congress will remain tough on 🇨🇳, presenting challenges for #Beijing as well as maintaining a certain degree of continuity, when it comes to Asia-related US foreign policy. See our latest article with Tusor A. published in czech journal of international relations. Guided by the constructivist literature on external shocks and a thematic content analysis of 561 online media news reports on the 2022 Hungarian national elections before and after the outbreak of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, we argue that the timing, the crisis type, and the contextual factor of whether populists are in power, matter for changes in the discursive strategies of populists and their ability to turn crises into opportunity structures during elections: https://lnkd.in/eV_r-WYY

With the approaching #EU elections in June, Mariella Di Ciommo & I argue that the new leadership should invest in a more strategic relationship with countries in the #GlobalSouth if it wants to realise its domestic priorities. This includes a more inclusive #IndustrialPolicy that engages developing & emerging economies, a balanced #migration strategy & a #security strategy that continues to support long-standing partners. https://lnkd.in/ePBT5yuk
