Happy America Recycles Day! 🌎 Or not… because America’s recycling rates are far lower than most of us realize. Only around 5% of plastic sent to recycling facilities is actually recycled. While metal, paper and glass containers fare a bit better—metal at ~13% and paper at impressive ~60% and glass containers at ~30%. So, if recycling in America isn’t where it should be, what can we do? Here are a few ideas: ♻️ Support products made from recycled materials. Many companies choose “virgin” materials over recycled ones because they’re cheaper. By voting with our wallets, we create demand for products made from recycled content, encouraging more businesses to use sustainable materials. ♻️ Choose the right packaging. Avoid “recyclable” plastic, as most of it won’t actually get recycled. Instead, opt for items packaged in materials with higher recycling rates, like metal, glass, or cardboard. These are more reliably recycled than plastics. ♻️ Keep recycling. Recycling only works if there’s demand for recycled materials and facilities remain open and funded. Stopping would only worsen the issue. ♻️ Recycle properly. Make sure your items are clean and free of grease or food before placing them in the recycling bin. Even small amounts of contamination can cause recyclable materials to end up in a landfill. Also, make sure you are recycling items that are actually recyclable. One wrong item in your recyclables can be the reason why the whole patch cannot be recycled. Environmentally friendly packaging - our contribution to a sustainable future Have you ever thought about how much packaging you come across every day? Much of it is made of plastic, a material that has a significant impact on our environment. At enwitec, we are aware of this challenge and therefore focus on sustainable solutions. 34% of our products are already packaged completely without plastic! We want our products to inspire not only you, but also the environment. That is why we are committed to continuously reducing the use of plastic in our packaging. What does that mean? - Filling material made from 100% recycled paper: To pack your orders safely, we use high quality recycled paper. Not only is this environmentally friendly, it also carries the prestigious Blue Angel eco-label. - Paper tape instead of plastic: From 2021, we will only use paper tape to seal our parcels. As a result, we avoided an impressive 40,850 metres of plastic last year. Why is this important? - To protect the environment: By not using plastic, we reduce our impact on the environment. Plastic waste in the oceans, microplastics in soil and water - these problems are everywhere. With our environmentally friendly packaging, we are making a small but important contribution to solving these challenges. - Conserving resources: Making plastic takes a lot of energy and raw materials. By using recycled paper, we not only save energy, but also valuable resources. - Circular economy: Recycled paper is made from waste paper and can be reused at the end of its life. This closes the loop and reduces the need for new raw materials. Our goals for the future We are proud of the progress we have made. But we want to do even better. Our goal is to further increase the proportion of plastic-free packaging and, in the long term, to eliminate plastic altogether. Working together for a better future We are convinced that each and every one of us can make a contribution to protecting our environment. The problem with PET bottles   In an article in the early 2024 NRC editor Liza van Lonkhuyzen takes a close look at the so-called sustainability of recycled clothes. What turns out: most clothes labelled recycled are not made from old clothes, but from returned PET bottles.   Good right? No. First, there is too little investment in something much more complicated, but also much more rewarding: recycling old clothes into new clothes. We call this "post consumer" - it involves used textiles. Garment manufacturers don't do that, but get the PET bottles from another circular system because it's so easy and cheap. Secondly, it seems sustainable, but they forget that you can endlessly make new ones from old PET bottles, while the PET bottles that end up in textiles never make it back into recycled bottles.   Besides the above issues, plastic in general is not bio-degradable and plastic in garments release micro plastics during use. To recycle old textiles the plastic content needs to be separated from the natural fibers. This makes the sorting process of post consumer/used textiles very in-efficient, complex and therefore costly. For this reason at nxtile we started our circular journey with pre consumer waste. This industrial waste creates the perfect entry point to save land, water and avoid CO2 emissions. As the plastic industry becomes a more environmentally friendly circular economy, brands are finding new ways to use recycled plastic. In fact, a whole new eco-friendly brands have been created specifically advertising their cool recycled range of clothes. Dresses, coats, jeans, and even shoes, bags and accessories can all be made from recycled plastic. Use of recycled material instead of virgin plastic massively reduces the amount of energy needed to manufacture. Carbon emissions are decreased, and less space is taken up in landfills.
